Dropped socket down turbo pipe..... HELP!!!!!!!!!

well was doing some work removing EGR and the bloody 12mm long reach socket dropped down the rear pipe and into the snail shell of my drivers side turbo......

I have tried a magnet on wire, wire, everything I can think of and cannot get it out.....

stripped the front pipe off and can see blades....

Removed elbow, removed all but 1 manifold nut and washer... can't get to it due to the inlet being in the way, can't seem to get to the 4 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold.....

Any idea's..... my arms and hands hurt from trying to get to these bolts......

I was actually going well till this bloody nightmare....

Can you rotate the inlet side of the turbo so I can get to the manifold bolt?

Mine seems to have a big cir clip holding it on and can't remove that as can't get to it.....

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH..........

I have turbo off at last..... and a couple of taps with a dead blow hammer and the socket fell out again..... Now all I need to do is put it or my spare back on....As I don't know if any of my turbo's is good..... how can I tell which is best one to refit?

Hi Mikey...... my fingers and hands look like Mark's gear knob..... chewed up!

I am leaving it for today as it is getting late..... will try and get it back together tomorrow.....

I should be okay getting it back together as I won't be using the tabs as Jeff recommended and will be using locking nuts that I am going to pick up tomorrow morning....

I did move the PTU and re-loom the wiring on the front of the engine.... nice new flexi conduit.... and everything water tight and sealed....

I did this to calm down after ripping my knuckles.....lol

Now make sure you fill the ends of any pipe or orrifice with a good handfull of workshop tissue when work is in progress:blush:

I did fill; the pipes..... cleaned up all tools and pulled out the nitrile glove that was over the top..... realised I left an extension bar on the rocker cover, grabbed it and socket fell off the end and down the pipe...... typical.....lol

Can Anyone tell me what to look for when deciding which turbo to refit?

I haver the one that was on the engine when I got it 2nd hand.... untested....

I also have a very clean looking one I got with a load of parts from someone.... it has no oil in the intake or exhaust.... looks pretty clean.....

Is there any way to definitively check which is better to refit please.....?

That is one of the worst bloody jobs you can do on these cars so well done be proud. DO NOT forget to prime the oil line again before firing up or you will kill that turbo fairly quickish.

Cheers z32bolt, I will look up priming the oil line and see if I can find a how to...... cheers

Remove the ECU fuse and turn over 10-15 seconds??

Sound about right?

Oh it's easy enough you just crank the engine over with the fuel relay out so it doesn't start, keep going till oil is flicking round the heads viewed through the oil filler cap. Once more for luck then you should be good.

Well Turbo back on at last.... I did a bit of a modification to the water pipes feeding the turbo.... I used the hard pipes from my spare drivers side turbo, so the pipe no longer goes toward the front of the engine bay but straight up.....

I have done the EGR, Air Con, PRVR, carbon canister and water deletes, so it was better to run the new hoses up and round behind the plenum....

AIV is next on the list, disconnected but still sitting in place behind the inner wings....

I have found the 90 degree metal pipe going into the rocker cover has come out of the passenger side that goes to the PCV valve.... Does this normally come out of the rocker cover??

Also the front pipe that goes to the other end of the PCV on the passenger side is also loose... the high one that sits under the throttle linkage....???

I did find there is no heat shielding on the passenger turbo or manifold.... Is it okay to leave it like this or should I take the one off the spare manifold I have and fit it on???
