What Exhaust do you have?...Varex Mufflers oppinions...

If some of you remember i'm looking at changing my exhaust, The pipes from my mid section to the backbox are badly corroded and have got little holes behind the wheels and they're slowly getting bigger.

I'm still unsure what to do. I've managed to find a place in Darlington that will replace those two pipes with stainless and attach them to my original Kakimoto boxes for £80 a side. however the boxes are quite old and looking through the pipe it doesn't seem to have a lot of packing left inside them.

The bloke said if I provide new back boxes he will fit them at no extra charge. but if he were to be providing the back boxes then it would be £200 a side, but he said it would be very loud, and would probably ruin it.

So in the spirit of keeping it quiet I've come across the Xflow varex mufflers, for those that aren't familiar its basically a muffler with a remote operated butterfly valve in the box giving you the option of a silenced muffled sound, or at the push of a button a straight through pipe

http://www.xforce.com.au/about-varex-remote-control-sports-muffler.php

the only problem been is that they are based in Australia, so shipping is expensive

Through talks with a bloke on ebay I've managed to work out a deal that will get me a pair of the 2.5" cannon boxes (or ovals, haven't quite decided yet) to my door for around £665 including VAT at customs and excise. then there's the £80 fitting each of course on top.

I just can't decide weather that's a little over the top or not, just to have a change of sound on the mufflers.

My worry is if I buy another system off the shelf then it'll end up been too loud and i'll regret doing it.

Any thoughts or ideas? What system is most common, and what do they sound like?

I like a roar when smashing it about some country roads, but I hate a constant drone on motorway trips. mine at present isn't too bad, but at the same time i'm only comparing it to my friends systems on their cars. I've never actually heard another zed from the inside...

If you want electric cut outs like those, speak to AAS Exhausts in Newcastle and get a price from them.

They supplied and fitted a custom exhaust and cut outs for my VXR8. Stuart does great work.

Zed #2: 1998 Midnight Purple 2+2 NA. (owned 2020 - now)

Zed #1: 1995 Blue Slicktop NA (2013-2015)

I have a scorpion back and is nice ans quiet but gives a nice sound when opened up that said on the na i had is straight through and is loued .but thats on a na. guess you still need a certan amount of back pressure if you have tubs. Sorry to open that can of worms again?

We have also have a company in norwich called power and exhaust and they build sytems from scratch wiyh or without remote open headers,

IMG_0036.jpgWe have a fujitsubo giken (fgk) it's a really nice exhaust quite quiet until you really give beans that's without decats should sound even better with decats fitted

If you are debating the tip style, its always twin-tips for me. And slightly larger than stock size really updates the Zed rear end.

for ref: I use a Greg Dupree X Pipe with resonators and Sebring backboxes:

Sorry I have't actually take any pictures of them fitted on my own Zed in all this time!

Nice.....

I am happy with the Blue Flame/Mongoose - for the same reason as you mate. Twins each side - just like stock but a bit bigger - and not too noisy either. There's a subtle low rumble when pootling along at around 2000rpm; but nothing so intrusive on the motorway. And it's not terribly expensive either - especially if you can still find the "Blue Flame" version....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Wow, that's one rotten exhaust.

I have a Veilside Evolution system. Not wanting to sound bias as I have seen and experienced pretty much every Z32 exhaust under the sun, but I can safely say the Veilside system is one of the best I've seen in terms of quality. It also makes a beautifully refined burble, with a gorgeous noise when you put your foot down, no rasp, droan or harshness, just and exotic deep burble.

They aren't the easiest systems to source as they went out of production over a decade ago, but if you seen one, I encourage you to snap it up!

Small sound-clip here also near the beginning.

Totally agree about twin tips they really set the back end off. sadly the last owner of mine fitted a high flow exhaust with oval tips sounds nice but bloody ugly :(

Ive got a full japspeed system, literally turbo back, so one silencer per side. Divorced downpipes, 2.5" front pipes and 2.5" cat back with a 3" slash cut. Its quite loud but I wouldn't say its LOUD, I don't go setting off car alarums etc and its certainly quieter than my old capri. It is however a little droney on the mway, the mongoose seems to be a popular easily sourced unit that is essentially very stock, just a bit bigger/better/louder.

How do cut outs work? I've seen apexi valves that fit in the pip but they don't seem to direct the flow anywhere, just shut it off. surely that can't be good. I gave them a google but there website doesn't really give much away, and it's a long way to go for a quote. may have to send them some emails and see what they say.

I've never been a massive fan of the twin tips, but looking at them photo's you may have changed my mind. I think it's because they're bigger than the standard ones, but they do look really nice. Would probably suit my rear bumper better too than one big pipe. xforce do a twin tip too for the same price as the others. and reading the thread it looks like they weren't cheep, so i'm guessing if I do get the Australian ones then it won't be massively more expensive than others. which is a little reassuring.

Are the resonators fitted in the centre xpipe?

Si that does sound awesome :cool2:, is that with CAT's and what type centre section?

Bit of a daft question, but the two box thingy's in my centre section, are they resonators :blushing:? How much difference does the shape of the centre section make? Mine looks like a H join but I believe its actually two separate systems, and they don't actually join, having it off in the past and looking down it, it looks like two separate pipes.

Another stupid question but which are the downpipes? am I right in saying that my front pipes bolt straight onto the turbo's I can't actually remember now. I've noticed the mongoose does seem to be popular, and Richard's look nice, but I would like something a little larger.

Thanks Steve. Exhaust is a cat-back. I left my cats in for a number of reasons. I'd only remove them if I was going 400hp+. They add a bit of resonance (I love the refined, but deep note my system has, it also saves any hassles at MOT time).

Centre section is of an H configuration (believe they need to have a balance section rather than be a true-twin - I forget quite why now, I think it's generally to do with turbo cars), behind that are two small resonators. I've just taken a photo (excuse the dust and crap under here, I need to clean it all up a bit). You can see the small resonators, just forward of this is the H-section which you can't see.

That's a Veilside system.

That looks (on my mobile) quite similar to the veilside ones

It is. Kakimoto systems don't have rolled tips. In addition, I've seen this car at Jeff's. It has a Veilside system.....just could do with a bit of a deep clean! ;)

I thought so but didn't wana say! What do you use to clean yours Si, mine doesn't seem to stay clean :-/

Probably cause you live op norf and it's always raining! haha! Mine never goes out in wet weather so it stays pretty clean. Just a light polish with Anusol :p every few weeks. Give it a really deep clean when I bought the car YEARS ago and just maintain it. It stays pretty clean actually and even just cleaning with Megs shampoo when I clean the car leaves it sparkly.

So i'm guessing without CAT's it'd be a little louder then? what age is it that decats become a problem for M.O.T's?

I got a veilside exhaust :-)

Lee your's is a bucket, I reckon I could fit my head in them. although it does sound pretty.

I've found a japspeed cat back system on ebay, it's seems a little cheep, I reckon it'll be loud as ****, there's no resonators or anything, just looks straight through.

Looking on some other sites there's some ridiculously priced systems, makes me think that the £700 odd i'd pay to have the varex fitted may not be that bad.

I took the wheel off earlier to check some rubbing under my arch and got a photo of the exhaust, the bloke in Darlo said he could save the back boxes by just welding the new pipe on, but from the looks of them they'll probably disintegrate...

Dude, those backboxes are trash, in fact, your whole exhaust is. I wouldn't save that if all I had to make a replacement with was baked bean tins! lol

If you're worried about cost.....have a look at getting one from a breaker. This one has a Scorpion system on it which are half decent.

92 I think for cat testing, but mine always seems to have a cat test at MOT time.

My apologies yes Simon it is a veilside system I was thinking bout Brian znut's zed as his has the kaki system on
