Took mine out for a little run prior to mot later this week, when i got home i noticed very slight smoke coming out of the gap around bonnet, opened it up, where it has been sitting for so long (2 years) has a tiny leak from the cam cover at the back which has dripped onto the turbo manifold.

Back to the thread, sorry

i noticed how hot the engine was, checked all pipes top and bottom hoses, rad and temperature is as it should be. heater inside blows nice and warm on full temp, and instantly goes icey cold when turned down.

So no air locks there. left it on tick over and after 15 mins, sub fan kicked in, a few seconds later it stopped. engine sounds great and very smooth. kept checking for everything for the next 1/2 hour, all good.

Do zed engines run hot, is this normal? i can still touch the plenium, but my hands are like asbestos being a plumber

It was a spirited drive i must add, needed to check all was good and to clean the rust of the brakes, after such a long time of not being driven

Have checked it all just now, engine is cold, rad level is the same, and expansion bottle is fine.

Am i getting paranoid or are they like this all the time

The under bonnet heat on these cars is its killer...do you have after market temp gauge and what was it. My motor runs at 70-74 centigrade but the heat under the bonnet is insane...Taking my heat shields off the turbo,s dont help so ime wrapping them soon.

Hi stu how are u,

have a look at your viscous, my plenum use to get hot to touch.

I got another viscous, and straight the way noticed how much more powerful new one was...

unless the aircon is on that 2nd fan shouldn't be kicking in, well mine never does that to me is saying its a bit to hot...

now with new viscous its quite cool to touch in engine bay...

Hi mate, how is your build coming along,?

i pretty sure my viscous is very good, as thats i how killed my last engine, my current one will let you spin it, but there is a fair bit of resistance if that makes sense, as my old one, you could spin it and it would keep going.

Just waiting to get it to be painted, not long now...

ive had a few zeds now, and if aircon is off, that 2nd fan never kicks in.

it does if I unplug the temp sensor, so know it works.

Only time it kicked in was when my viscous was crap or low on water...

start car from cold viscous should be like a plane taking off, then it should get quieter.

But with bonnet open should be so much air movent...

pretty sure my zed (the black one) as a Nismo thermostat in it, as it always idles around 74 which is way to low a temp for a OEM thermo to even open, after a spirited drive, or this hot weather sitting still in traffic it will sit around 79 80, but soon as you start getting cold air flowing again its comes down to around 74, im pretty sure my viscous fan is stuck solid as it sounds like a jet engine no matter how long the engine has been running. but boy does that thing shift some air.

The plenum is usually hot to the touch, but you can rest your hands on it for a fair while before having to remove them.

Definitely worth making sure the viscous fan is working. There is a straight forward check than can be done, albeit a bit scary.

When the engine is first started from cold, you should be able to stop the fan with a heavily gloved hand. I do this by gradually applying pressure to the inside edge of the fan until it stops. Once the engine is up to temp' you should find it impossible to stop, you should also notice a considerable difference in air flow when revved.

Please be careful mind.

i was also wandering weather or not to take and keep of all that insulation the sits underneath of the bonnett. or will these affect the temp , after all it was put there for a reason tho.?

This thread ties in quite nicely to something I was considering: could it be worthwhile to have my bonnet louvred?

And does anyone know if Kool Louvres are still in business...??

The trouble with louvers is water getting in to the engine area I know a lot of people have done it but its something I would not recommend.

pmsl a bit scary, have done this, but not with a glove and not intentionally, dropped my spanner down the side and thought i could get it without hitting the blades, should have turned the engine off first. wow never seen knuckle skin be removed so fast., but i did move the spanner, onto the even faster moving air con belt, the zed decided, it didnt like that, and shot it back at me just for good measure, missed my head by 1cm and landed in next doors garden.

Cheers for replys guys, will monitor it

I'm just trying to think of ways to get some hot air out of there...

Imo the way the hot air is dispersed from the engine area is ok the way Nissan designed it. I lift the bonnet after a long run to get rid of the hot air quicker plus it stops the plastic parts in and around the engine area from going brittle.

putting vents in the bonnet wont really help much in the way of cooling, you need to look at a pressure diagram of a zed and work out where the high and low pressure areas are, and design scoops and vents in the right areas so the cool air flows through the bay and doesnt get trapped and become stagnant.

Titanium heat wrap on the turbos, manifolds and piping will VASTLY reduce underbonnet temps.

I used it and even after a spirited drive you were able to touch the downpipe ( it was hot but still able to touch for a good few seconds)
