anyone had them, fook me they are painfull, ive recently started running (for about 4 months now) and have achieved 2 miles a night 6 days a week, then suddenly woke up with an almight pain in my shin and calve, feels like ive constantly been kicked in the shin everytime i walk, really annoyed me as i havent been for a run for about a month now

last night i went to my first fun run meet (professinal runners setting up classes for beginners) and im shocked as to how little i knew about running, after my first hour session of HIIT training my leg feels so much better (although very sore this morning lol) a lot it was due to not warming up correctly and not doing the correct stretching, ive also been told i pushed myself too far as a beginner

long gone are the days of just whacking on a pair of shoes and off you go, there is so much has changed in performance running since i was at school lol, and its no help that im a lot older now lol

but on a plus im a very healthy 12.3 stone now down from a regular 13.7-14 stone lol, such a great release from stress aswell, when ya running and you concentrate on your running your mind empites from all the stress (comes back when ya stop though lol)

can thoroughly recommend running as a pastime and stress reliver, but please join a local club and get some expert advice as i wouldnt wish shin splints on anyone (well maybe some lol)

any other runner, joggers or fun runners on here?

Hi, Erm, I started to drive at 17 and have been that lazy ever since that I drive to my local shop.....takes about 1 minute to drive there......lol

I think about walking or running and then I get tired thinking about it........ I must admit I do need to get fit...... May have to actually do it after my arthroscopy op is over and knee is mended......

I have just gone from 19 stone 2lb's to 16 stone in last 43 weeks..... so need to start doing some exercise to go with diet, just never have time with a 1 year old and 5 year old, plus various foster children.....lol

My excuse anyway.....lol

Nice to see someone on here seems to be getting fit.....lol

i was one of the quickest and best long distant runners in my school back in 1995, even my first few years of work i was very fit, then i passed my driving test and tasted stella for the first time, it was all downhill from there lol

i used to be about 10-11 stone when i was younger

got a wakeup call sometime around christmas having fun with my son (was just under a year old) pushing him about the house in his toy car, i felt dizzy tight chested and had to sit down, really did think i was having a heart attack lol, was just a simple case of being extremely unfit and overweight, i feel very good about myself now, do about 200 pressups a day aswell as it all helps, recently fitted a pull up bar at work and ive started working on my abs as im thin enough to show muscle now

my first run i couldt get down to the bottom of the road, about 20-30 seconds of slow jogging and i was goosed, but now im much better

little tip with sit ups and press ups, when watching tv at night, everytime an advert comes on do 10 pressups, next advert 10 situps and so on through out the night, start and build up the amount you do as time goes on and you get stronger, all helps with weight loss and fitness and if you do it when adds are on instead of all in one go you dont get sick, give it a go

Don't think I've ever suffered from shin splints, but what I would say is dont ignore the warning pains. Found this out to my cost on a recent multi day hiking trip, halfway into my second day the back of my left ankle was aching. I kept on going and snapped my achillies tendon a couple of days later. Not 100% it was related but too much of a coincidence.

Yeah I had it a few years ago and it takes ages to go. I think it's you muscle tearing away from the bone.

For me it's never been the same. I waited months doing stretches every day. Then as soon as the tempo went up bang. Off it went again. Tried it about six times then I gave up.

Even now if I sit funny working on the car etc you feel the odd pain :(

I am lifting 40 kg and doing 20 reps, about 6 times a day at moment to get my arms back...... (had carpal tunnel op on both hands last november)..... so have lost my strength a bit.....

I used to press double that a few years ago..... Building up slowly again now..... Started swimming to get fitness levels up again..... No impact on my knee through swimming.....lol

Can't do any abs work as having hernia op on 1st July and big bulge from rib cage to belly button if I do any type of crunch..... Only appeared since losing 3 stone.....lol

Yes, I am falling apart......lol

i was given a very good exercise for shin splints last night

stnad with you feet together then slowly raise one leg to the point when your foot is dangling its a few inches off the floor, once you have you balance close your eyes, as you struggle to keep your balance the muscle round the shin is working and will help to strengthen, its very hard to master and you can feel it working

sits back and imagines the amout of people trying this and falling over lol

lol It did at the time, and just as well I was in the middle of nowhere.....the air must have turned blue, but funnily enough the pain dissapeared after a couple of minutes, including the pain I had been feeling for the previous 4 days. My foot flopped about a bit though :)

my foot was like that with my shin splints, found i was walking and tensing my leg to try and stop the pain, when sitting i would get pins and needles in my foot and it would go all floppy, not the only thing that goes floppy with old age either lol

insanity is very good if you have the space, found it hard to do in my house, i do have it and he does the HIIT in the oppisite way, long intervals of high intensity with low recovery times in between reps, not for begginers lol
