Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to post this but I'm looking for an old knock / det sensor. Just want the two pin plug from a dead one to wire in a resistor. I'd rather wire it in to a removable plug if poss so if anyone's got a dead one laying around, can I have it please?

Ta very muchly..

So i took the radiator out today... only after that and after buying a new timing belt from USA did i see the sticker on the covers that read it was done 5 years 10k km ago...

So i guess that i will be selling the brand new timing belt now as it is not worth it to open everything up and put a new one in.

Hi Ali

I see from the massive response you generated from this I'm coming to the party a bit late.

I guess you've come to the conclusion the right thing to do is replace the belt by now.

Just to make you feel a bit better about it, when I bought the car I was told it had been garaged and forgotten about for nearly 8 years after a failed attempt to steal it.

If that is the case I seriously doubt it was replaced 5 years ago, it probably was 10,000 km ago, but most likely when it first came into the country, which I think if memory serves was 2004.

I reckon you may have read a 4 as a 9 on the sticker.

I had a belt go on a V6 Vectra and it £1100 in parts alone and that was 2001.

It really isn't worth the risk mate.

The cambelt change sticker on the case says it was replaced at 62000 kms at 10year (2010), 4th month. (Lucky I speak half Japanese)

I've just realised it could be 4th year (2004) 10th month in which case you could be right O.O

I will change it after all just for piece of mind.

The problem is that the car was first registered in the UK on 27 May 2003

and I just can't see a UK garage using a Japanese sticker.

Yes that is the one, 62ks and in japanese the first symbol is year, and the second is month. but as i said of course it could be 2004 it was replaced and im a doofus :pinch:

I am going to replace it anyway, though it will take more than a couple of hours

I think the sticker comes with the belt from Nissan so if they have separate part numbers that's feasible.

You get a japanese and UK sticker when you get the cambelt

That will be one of those jobs you will get an enormous amount of satisfaction from.

Just take it slow and photograph everything.

I've been working on engines most of my adult life and part of my youth due to being a motorcycle fanatic as a kid. I've been a part of this forum for a relatively short time compared to most but, although I'm fairly experienced with most engines, the 300 has a very complex engine and electrical system.

I sit here reading these posts from you guys and the experience I've had from a lot of Z owners is that experience and knowledge are your best friend here.

Theres a few guys on here that are very OEM about the Z and a few that are serious petrol heads in to tuning etc. It's a great mix of experienced guys and girls that over the years have learned that the Internet and the workshop manual do not always know best!

IMO Ali, you seem to have the same view as I did at your age, that being the view that you know a lot about this car from your reading of Internet and manuals. I hope you take this the right way my friend but your knowledge and skills with these vehicles would get lost in the sea of expert experience found on this forum.

Please swallow your pride and take the advice from these guys, they will help you to keep your pride and joy at its peak.

I've owned a whole bunch of high powered big engined cars and worked on them myself over the years but this car is a little different in a lot of ways.

Sometimes you need to put what you think you know to one side and listen to the voice of experience. Otherwise you may end up learning the hard way as I have on occasion and the hard way usually smashes your wallet or takes the opportunity of keeping your pride and joy away.

It costs nothing to listen, it costs nothing to make an educated decision. The members here are offering you the specialist education of experience. That is a priceless offering..

Being young and wanting to show youre clever is perfectly acceptable, but being dumb and closing your mind to a depth of experience which will make your life easier is just plain ignorance.

I'm not putting you down Ali, just pointing out the fact that you seem to be ignoring experience and listening to the Internet, which is only going to send your pistons through your valves and put your car in a breakers mate..

Learn to trust the guys at the forum. If they don't know the answer to your questions they will tell you that. If they have advice for you, listen to it because you'll find that in 99% of cases. They'll be right!

Please don't take offence to this, I'm just trying to steer you in the right direction to make and keep the friends here. I wish someone had told me when I was your age, I might have spent less time under the car and more time driving it!

I know, i know. It was just as Stephan said i didn't think that 5 years would be enough to need a replacement (So i thought) and i just wanted people to agree with me to make me feel better, but i suppose i should just bite the bullet and use everyone's advise and just change it.

That will be one of those jobs you will get an enormous amount of satisfaction from.

The reason i am probably not that enthusiastic about it is because I've spent ~£50 on it and i am going to see literally 0 change. It should all be worth it though

That's completely the wrong way to look at it.

Better to spend £50 and see "no change" than to not spend £50 and then have to fork out for a new engine or lots of costly repairs.

These simply aren't cheap cars to own and maintain, so £50 for peace of mind is nothing :)

When you're on a budget as tight as mine and ambitions, I'm afraid every penny counts.

Mondo's SOOOOOOOO right.

Just think about it like this.

With your PC you see no change to it's performance when you renew your antivirus software, but you wouldn't not do it.

Think about what RPM actually means, now think about how many times a second your engine has to do something and now ask yourself do you want to use an "old" something.

We've all been there but that is £50 well spent and as I said when you step back afterwards and think "I did that" you'll have way more than £50 worth of smugness.

When you're on a budget as tight as mine and ambitions, I'm afraid every penny counts.

All the more reason to spend £50 now, rather than hundreds later :thumbup1:

Even in my short time of being a Zed-owner (2.5 years), I've seen lots of people come and go on this forum who've bought themselves their dream car and then ended up selling it not long after because the upkeep was far more than they either expected or could afford!

As I said, they're not cheap to own or maintain properly, and it's far better to do things on them properly than to attempt to cut corners or put off some routine servicing just because money is tight!

If it makes you feel any better, I had my timing belt on the Shortie changed after about 3.5 years of it being fitted (and 6 months of me owning the car), just for my own peace of mind. :thumbup1:

I'm okay with it now, i just tried to convince myself that it didn't need changing :(

Just had a thought with the sticker.

English Grease Monkey + Japanese sticker = numbers put in wrong place.

Also I have a feeling Japanese is read left to right, top to bottom.

So isn't it likely the boxes are swapped on the Japanese compared to the English one.

I reckon you are correct with you assumption that it was 4th year 10th month, but I think the sticker has been filled in incorrectly by an English mechanic.

Very first thing I did with my shortie, bought it and drove it straight to friends performance car garage.

I had quotes for it to be done, one said it wouldn't do it (im guessing because high powered old car) and another wanted above £500 for labour

In Japanese if it is written horizontal (as it is here) it is read from left to right like English, but as you say it was probably a lazy mechanic.

Offer to pay a forum member in Beer and food, I bet you'll get someone local down to give you some guidance.

In fact now I've posted that I'll be surprised if you don't comments along the lines of-

How much beer?

I only eat KFC!

Do Dominos deliver where you are?

I think I can probably do it meself (with a friend) and I just need to remember all the bolts for all the accessory belts and the tensioning etc etc.

I think i will need a hand with the boost system though. Martin did you say that Blitz system didn't work or if it wouldn't boost? I might try to wire it back in again and see if i can program it.

I've found only too often Ali that being on a tight budget means things just take longer than we want them to. It's all too tempting to cut a corner but the outcome will usually mean you pay more in the long run or watch the money you've spent go up in smoke along with the dreams of the car youre working hard to build.. I used to have a rover SD1 and spent fortunes on it, decided to take a short cut with the nitrous kit I had fitted and opted for a cheap micro switch as the safety measure to stop it injecting below safe revs.. The result was a friend pushing the nitrous button whilst I sat in traffic, my engine threw it's top end through the bonnet and through the shop windows close by in pieces..

I saved a total of £60 on the switch, it cost me the car which had over £14000 spent on it.. I don't need to do the maths any more.. I know that impatience and lack of experience can cost you the earth. Only really jammy lucky people get away with things and even that is occasionally!

Do it right. Even if it takes you till your thirty.. You'll appreciate it so much more and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you were wise!
