Getting vibration at 40mph. I spent this morning changing the prop shaft over. I got a prop from a member a few weeks ago. I took it to a prop specialist and they put it on there machine and they said it was good and the bearing was good.

Put it on the car and still getting vibration at 40.

Can anyone suggest what else it could be because its doing my head in.

I don't think I have spigot rings, but a was getting vibration on the old prop with standard wheels.

How do I fond out what spigot rings I need?

Rings and wheel balancing would be the obvious things... Sorry can't shed anymore light on it than that!

The propshaft balancing test was most likely misleading, most propshaft vibration on a zed is caused by the two piece prop been misaligned due to the rubber section that the bearing is housed in become very hard and not compliant, this leads to the rubber drooping and then staying in that position and hence leading to the alignment issue, when they tested it they would have leveled it up so the drooping bearing issue would not be tested .

One piece unit is the best solution as the bearing is silly money from Nissan UK and the cheap bearings on ebay are very poor quality and become noisy in operation.

I also have 5mm spacers on the wheel. When I got the wheels I was told they would go straight on the car. Guess what they didn't go straight on.

Would spigot rings still work with the spacers on?

Yes but all depends on the spacers.

i should think you would need hubcentric spacers and do away with the rings

What about a collapsed gearbox mount, this can put the prop at the wrong angle and cause a vibration from the prop.

You got any mounts in your garage to goodies?

I've not fitted the brakes I got from you yet. It's been to cold

I've got a Nismo one fitted to the silver one, the old one had collapsed and was about 1cm shorter than the new one.

Is the mount up for sale? If not where did you get it from

So it looks like the possible causes are:

propshaft rubber housing (has become hard)

missing or ill fitting spigot rings

collapsed gearbox mount

and the solutions:

one piece prop shaft or replaced rubber (not cheap or quick to fit)

hubcentric spacers (about £70 a pair but cheaper than a prop and easy to fit)

new gearbox mount (cheap but not quick to fit either)

none of these are easy to test…

So I guess it’s going to have to be a take your pic and work your way along..

Might even be a combination of them..

Also make sure your track rod ends, torsion bar and all other bushing is tight.

Best of luck.

Had that same problem a few months back mate, changed prop, balanced wheels did everything possible and in the end it was bloody spigot rings. previous owner never fitted them

OK...I'm thick, Ive got same problem and its been diagnosed as prop shaft centre bearing, where the fook are the spigot rings?? :)

They go inside the center of the wheel, they take up any slack between the hub and the inside of the wheel.

OK thanks Paul, if any one has a piccy to post that would help. Had the vibration with stock wheels on, when I changed the wheels I cant say I noticed anything unusual??

Here you go, the yellow part is the spigot ring. You need 66.1 to what ever you wheels are.

Same with me had the problem with standard wheels. So is it spigot rings?

No, on standard rims this would not be the problem, if the car has been standing for any length of time the tires could be oval causing vibration or worn bushes plus any of the other things that's already been mentioned.

if you have spacers on standard wheels then yes

Didn't have spacers on with the standard wheels

the standard wheels are designed to fit the hub snug so you don't need spigot rings (unless as stated above spacers have been used to bring the wheels out).

so Lee, it it would seem that isn't the cause......

however it might have just been that the wheels needed balancing.

Anyway, irrespective of that, once you put non OEM wheels on you should used them (or hub-centric spacers) to take up any slack.

time to check the gearbox mount and think about a single piece prop as well as checking all the bushing and links.
