Hi all,

I'm considering coming over to 300zx fold and ideally would be after a nicely powered (450bhp +) swb tt, not to bothered about paint work as long as it's not rusty, and a transistor radio will also be ok instead of a shake the back window out boom box.

Running that amount of hp, would everyone say a built engine is needed?

Good luck, swb tt's are rare, find one thats 450bhp+ is going to really narrow you down. Most zeds are typically either stock or running around 350-370 fwhp which consists of running a chip and around 14-16psi, this should be fairly cheap. Going to the next stage is where it starts hurting your wallet. Although its not essential to rebuild the bottom end to start heading north of this (the bottom end is apparently good for 500 bhp, with correct fueling and supporting mods) your going to be pulling the block to fit larger turbos, engine out job im afraid, and fitting larger injectors, obviously it would be wise to get things like the cambelt etc sorted before this, where do you draw the line? there is little point is bolting on the supporting equipment to run 500 ponies only to pull it out in six months to have to rebuild it due to a fecked bottom end because a bearing etc was duff. In all honesty there are other cars that are cheaper and easier to pull big number out of, but the z32 makes a true monster when built properly. welcome to the club and I suggest to spend some time floating around reading and learning.

Thanks guys, thought the swb would be a rare beast. z32bolt, thanks for the good bit of technical advice, so with 500+ the crank is at the upper end of what it can take and it might be time to go billet.

Its not so much that, the crank and rods are fordged, the pistons however arnt and the bearings are best upgraded. Im by no means an expert but we have a few on here that could give you the ins and outs.

Finding a SWB of that spec will be pretty difficult mate, however with a bit of searching on ebay/Pistonheads over the next few months you're quite likely to come across a number of LWB TT's claiming 400-450bhp. That being said to find one that is genuinely running those power figures rather than a sellers guesstimate, I feel will be a bit of a quest......but no doubt they are out there.

i know where theres a slick swb needs a lot of work ,been sitting in a corner under a tree for about 2 years

Thanks for the heads up, but kinda looking for one that's already been done, you have got me thinking a bit though, wonder if anyone has ever put an LS3 in a swb slick top (sorry to offend the purists out there)

ls1 is becoming more common by the day, check out hybridz just google it, theres a chap in the us with a single turbo vh45de

I know of a black lwb that has a rebuilt engine that i did several years ago with forged pistons, new turbos, nismo injectors,it will make 450 ish when mapped, its only done 5000 miles since if that.

spec for reliable 450 bhp will need to be bottom end rebuild , rods, although they are forged OEM, upgraded race forged rods is the way to go for peace of mind, race bearings follow that, then forged pistons. , de bur the water ways ( remove cast flashings ) metal head gaskets, head work is not essential as cams and valves ars ok , but stage 2 cams and springs from Junauto would be nice, next would be the exhaust manifold , the standard cast manifold is quite restrictive, a Mike Smith manifold set up will sort that out, next on to the manifolds is the tubs and down pipes, ,again with performance you need good breathing, both in and out so divorced waste gates pipes would help, a 3 inch system might be over the top, but a de cat exhaust will certainly help matters, bigger tubs ( many to choose from ) on the fueling side the restriction is the fuel rail...anything over 555cc on the standard fuel rail in the older cars is not possible so if you want to size up the injectors beyond that a border 360 fuel rail is required, this effectively reduces the fuel limitation issues and allows for higher boost levels, air inlet will need bigger uprated side mount intercoolers, or as big as possible single front mount intercooler running hard pipes to negate any pipe collapse, the rest is free flow air filters, dual AFM or dual intake. and larger radiator,

this leads to replaceing the hoses and lines with new silicone or braided steel lines, the clutch will be well past its grip limit at this point and will be slipping like a dog on tiles, so new race clutch is a must , while you are in there a lightened balanced fly wheel will help, mate this lot to a one piece prop shaft and finish it up with some leader gear ratio's in the diff,

brakes and brake lines / fluid should not be forgotten , the standard z32 brakes are good if they are overhauled but many chose to go the bigger disc caliper set up...

All in all that's a lot of spec to find on an already really rare car I went the lwb route and love my zed although she needs a ton of work I've got 6 grand to blow on her so now it's all about panning

Welcome to the club, there is one here in the classified section, this is pretty close to your required spec

Problem is he said he wants one already done, that ones needs loads of work.... it looks like someone has bought 3 or 4 Zeds and tried to make a good one but failed miserably...
