im putting decats on the Zed but being told this will ruin the turbos because of back pressure.

the tech threads also seem to assume this.

Has any body any evidence that this is actually the case or is it simply they speed up the process of already worn turbo seals?

Have a look for my thread on turbos, from recent. Mine dled after decatt. However theres more too it. Theyre generally showing it up rather than the root cause.

Its all to do with seal wear and breather condition. The backpressure from the cats masks the overpressure created in the sump by crap breathers.

I've had decats on several Zeds and never had a problem with turbo seals :)

Sod it, Im going to put them on then.. its not the reason you stripped your Zed is it Baz??:whistling:

decatting it will not harm or cause anything the only reason it causes turbos to go is because they are already shot and releasing the back pressure allows the seals to fall apart because it was the only thing keeping it together

meaning the turbos were already dead and the back pressure was there last life line before a failure new turbos and decat will live happily ever after

From the last thread

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?167320-decatt-advice

Saying they dead is a tad dramatic, nowt stopping you removing the turbo and fitting new piston ring seals, afterall it is only that component part greatly effected.

Your gauranteed a power hike and better performance, there is a likelyhood that yes, if your turbo's rear piston ring seal is already worn through either age or neglect it will give up sooner than it would have done had you not decatted. This is something well known by the bigger and older established turbo companies, hence why a few now supply stagger gap piston ring seals as used on race cars that are turbo'd and have little or no back pressure.

Can it happend and is luck of the draw on reconned turbo's? yes it can!

Do yourself a favour and do your pcvs at the same time.

Big time good advice...these little devils cause more issues on these motors than are mentioned,or even better throw them in the bin and do a pcv/breather delete.

Ill look through the tech threads on the deletes... is there a kit you can purchase to do this?

Cheers Brian, finished work now so going to have a look.. definately worth doing it then?? no possible problems can arise from doing it?

Yep its a great Mod imho...a vented motor is a happy motor as you dont want any positive pressure at all in the sump.
