Hi Mark, I am about to embark on a similar build but I am dreading the piston ring gapping process. How easy/difficult is it to ensure that the ring ends remain square after grinding? Is a dremel tool up to the job? Anyways great build this is and I will be following this one for sure. Keep em pics coming. :thumbup1:

Gapping piston rings is quit an easy job .. just very time consuming as u have to check it at least 6+ times on each ring to get the right size gap

as for keeping the ends square u only do one side and u have the other to compare against to keep it straight

and the dremmel will do the job just fine thats what i used .. with a Fine grinding disc end just take your time ...

Had to get some New heads machined up

due to an Incorrect Skimming Profile on one of them

so just stripping new ones down so i can start to Port and Polish them Again :(

Mark can you explain more about what you're doing when you gap the piston rings? What thickness feeler gauge do you use? Is it the same process for all the rings, im presuming there are three per piston?

  • Author

ok its a little complex as the Gap for Piston rings change from Top to 2nd plus on the bore size ... but here gos

Will take a Typical 88mm Wiseco Piston

they have some Gap recomended size and its all done in Thou Inch

For Turbo applications its

.0050 top Ring

.0055 2nd Ring

Now you have to Multi ply that by the bore Size in Inch

88mm = 3.46" x .0050 = .0173 or ( .4394mm ) This is your Top Piston Ring Gap

88mm = 3.46" x .0055 = .0190 or ( .4833mm ) This is your 2nd Piston Ring Gap

the Oil Rings are Pre set size and do not need gapping

Hope you kinda understand

How long did it take you to grind all that out then mark? Have you just taken it to the boundary of the gasket? I believe the exhaust side should be super smooth and the intake can be left rough as it aids mixture iirc.

  • Author

both can not be to smooth .. as this will not agitated the flow and hinder the flow its self ...

Exhaust ports have been opened up 5.5mm width/hight to match the headers Leaving 1mm down step

Most of today to do one Head .. i need to take other pics as cam dosnt really show it all

Oh right that's not too bad all things considered. Its boring and time consuming work aint it. You still on stock cams with this build?

Check Page 5 post 99 out

full list on pics ... but yeah BDE after market pulleys

I think you have a good point there z32bolt. As I understand it, if you polish the inlet too smooth, you get a condition known as wetting, this is where the fuel separates from the mix and clings to the smooth surface of the ports.

Seem to recall reading it somewhere.

  • Author

yep .. your right ... the porting isnt ultra smooth polished .. it still has a texture to it

That looks like a piece of art. I'm not mad on massive power chases as you can only use so much on the road, but geez that looks sweet, such a shame you will never see it :(

  • Author

not sure really

but the tubs/injectors/crank/pistons/cams/ and other bits are good for 800+ on paper and Specs

all depends on how its tuned i guess so anything more than 300hp would be great :)

Don't be so soft what do you think a near stock zed can pull more than 300 or did you mean more like 500 ?

Well I hope you reach the magic 250 lol

Who gives a :xxx: what people think I don't care any more there are to many :xxx: out there, who are wannabes or drive around in half maintained sh1t that think they know what there on about,

At least I admit I woundnt have a clue where to start and as long as your happy.

Hi Mark, in your porting activitiy are you going to remove the protruding valve guides and head bosses in the ports as I see some modders do? What are your views on the spark plug shrouds in the combustion chamber?

i'm not doing that for 2 reasons really .. Tools .. u need some nifty Press and aligning tools to take out put back and then put in New valve Seats and cut them

and then the other will be just down to Cost of it .. .. really
