Tomorrow will see me starting on the tranformation of Bob's slicktop from a fast road car to a much more extreme track car.

As with the original project to create the car i'm delighted to be involved in this next round of modifications.

Bob brought the car(as a rolling shell) to me on Saturday and we spent some time discussing the work to be done. I also took the opportunity of making a start on seat mounts/position while i had Bob to trial fit.:smartass:

Being securely located in your preferred driving position is an essential part of quick lap times.

The brief for the revised car is to create a competent track/strip/sprint/hillclimb 300ZX.

Many of the events to be entered specify the car to be road legal. In reality the car will be trailered to events so the need for creature comforts is minimal.

There are three goals to achieve...

1. More power.

2. Less mass(weight)

3 More downforce.

The combination of these three elements will be more speed. And its speed that counts

The big news on the more power front is the installation of a full Kyle Puckett built engine. formerly located in the 2+2 that Madmax(on this forum) had built and now owned by Bob

That isnt part of my job thank goodness.

Less weight and more downforce are tho and tomorrow i will be making a start on the weight saving task.

I will basically follow the same route as I have done on my own car and also what forum members Jaffa and EssBee have done. We all use the lightest car to begin with ... the 2 seater slicktop.

So hopefully those of you with an interest in the motorsport side and of going faster will find something of interest in this unfolding tale.:winkiss:

Those of you who are more concerned with modified lights. leds in everything, amps, subs, woofers and retrimmed interiors should stop reading now:whistling:

Initial pics and more detailed spec to follow tomorrow......

Great progress Pete. Are you keeping a track on the weight saving or just going for a final weight?

There is no real point in weighing whats being removed because there are other parts to be added. In particular a full weld in cage.

The final weight is what matters.

My focus is to remove everything that is not absolutely neccessary.

This will help keep the final weight to the minimum possible.

Bigger brakes. bigger turbos.Fire extinguisher. NOS bottle, bigger wheels n tyres(even lightweight wheels) etc all serve to increase the weight

Are you going to use those Grams wheels off the spare Zed? They must be pretty light?

They are so not a track wheel! I think bob has Volk ce28 which are about as light as you can get

What materials are you planning on using for the undertray?

We will start with plywood to get shape/size etc about right.

I have a large sheet of aluminium which will probably be the final item.

Jaffa has already given you the answer..............:smartass:

I'm off to my place in Spain on Friday for a week so I will pick up on this when I get back:tooth:

How come you're not going for a carbon fibre or GRP boot? One of the biggest weight savers on the car isn't it?

lack of weight over the rear wheels i should imagen and the weight distrabution will be screwed up. so nose heavy= under steer.

i did think about that dave but i was thinking theyd find a way to balance that loss.

Would it not tend to over steer with a lighter rear end.

no weight through the corner would cause a reverse pendulem think of an arrow head. the lightness over the rear will make the car moe prone to lift off oversteer however it being rear wheel drive its less likly. but realistically any tendancy to under or over steer is detremental to lap times.

And so... after a week in Fuengirola sitting in the sun plus a day playing at Santa Pod its time to get on with this slicktop.

The process of removing sound deadening. De bracketing and lightening goes on... and on.....

However the hatchback area was completed yeasterday so I decided to take advantage of the mildish weather and get some paint on(with some extra heat required)

Its not very exciting and the pics are'nt either but its moving on....... I think:whistling:

When Im done the whole interior will be clean fresh white with no ugly brackets etc sticking up to catch on.

Pics....................................

After a visit from Bob I have the final height etc on the seat mount so today I welded it up and painted it.

i have also had an initial fit of the Sard wing. With seat and wing in place I have now got a stem length for the rear view mirror sorted.

The seat and frame has taken some time to get done but it needs to be right first time as there wont be a second chance if it all goes pear shaped!!

Enjoy the pics and have a private snigger if you like over the wing.

Isn't the rear hatch heavy mainly due to the weight of the glass mate, are you looking at alternate material options?

Looking amazing Pete! must be brilliant to get into these projects and be able to really go to town on them!

i know that its function over fashion but jeeze that wing is ugly, it sits so high. looking good though, and im enjoying the subtle plate.

Polycarb window set to be fitted!

Its pretty satisfying although it always involves days and days of tedious work before we gat to the goodies.

Its just fortunate that my level of attention to detail and my vision of the end product is pretty much what Bob wants.

We have never fallen out over anything since I fetched the original car from Bradford.

There is a time in most projects when you think "I should never have started this"

i think I was at that point yesterday as I stripped out the dash area to remove all the heater stuff.

LOl!

What a mess.

Then today with a couple more hours of effort I finally got all the sound deadening out and the floors ready for painting.

A couple of nice little trinkets turned up also to add to the "things to fit" list.
