Hi,

Last week I went to see the same garage that I'm hoping will be carrying out a full respray on the Z before too long about completing the swap from auto to manual.

They haven't done one of these before (surprise) but as I'm hoping to hand over some of the more time consuming jobs to them, I think it's a good idea they get familiar with it.

So I've emailed the how to document to them, I have a donor vehicle.

How long will it take the average garage to complete the task? (Just trying to give them as much info as I can).

Cheers

That's about what I thought. I thought you guys taking it on yourself on the drive with no ramp or tranny jack were doing it in a weekend. So it should be much easier for them.

i think it might take them a bit longer due to not being familiar with the zed, i think they might struggle on 2 area's, getting the clutch pedal in and the electrics side of things.

A garage that has not done a Manual conversion on a Z before will NOT be able to do it in a day. While its feasible, they are going to want breathing room to solve and fix problems encountered. Its typically a 2man job for an experience garage to do it as a drive-in, drive-out in a day, but most will want the car for at least a couple of days.

Bear in mind that Z specialists will charge you about £1500 for the job, and around half of that is labour.

Just done a nonturbo to a twin turbo and manual conversion on my vert took 3 days working til 8pm that was three of us ,dave you should have come and give us a hand !!

I agree its going to take more than a day, they may b ef able to do the bulk in a day but they will wznt longer to work out the kinks. I helped do one with two members that took a total of 24 working hours. When I did mine it took around 12/15 hours, im still tweaking it its back on the road but ive got, niggles to sort.

Thanks for the input, I'll wait and see what they come back with.

Ok, the garage has been in touch and the estimate seems reasonable. I've told them I'll supply all required parts (so I can choose what goes in). Question is what shall I change, the list I have so far is:

1) Crank Shaft Seal (weeping a little)

2) Clutch

3) Propshaft centre bearing

What else would be a good idea to change whilst it's guts are laid all over the garage?

New Clutch shaft spigot bearing ( go's in the end of crank )

Skim the flywheel if it needs it

check gear box rear mount for splits

New Clutch shaft spigot bearing ( go's in the end of crank )

Is that the one that needs chiseling off as in the how to doc?

Thanks

Auto has a large metal spigot bearing, thats the one that gets hammered out, the one you need is the brass spigot bearing, about £5 from nissan.

Other things you might want to replace why its off, clutch release fork / clutch release bearing, clutch release fork retaining pin (all available from either MJP in the traders section, or zcentre) you already put down the rear crank seal.

Cheers, what clutch has people had good experience of, any particular make/type. The engine is standard (well almost).

I put a blueprint one in mine im running about 320 bhp been fine for last 6 months no slipping cheap as well around £230 plus i had a flywheel skim £60

Will I need these bits for mine Voddy?

i changed the input and output shaft seals on the box and the main front gasket. its worth replacing the clutch fork piviot ball. and gear stick bushes.

they where working fine when i had the car the kit came from, and im sure jim will agree, so doubt they would need changing, but as they are renewable, would depend if you want the peace of mind of not having to go back in their if they give out.

Its pretty much the only reason anyone really replaces them, as the box is off so may as matter of course, but totally up to you really.

The one thing i would suggest changing though is the rear crank seal on the engine.

you are showing off now !

Which garage are you using buddy??

I have a mate doing mine one weekend at the garage he works at.

Can you get the renewable parts from a Nissan dealers or is MJP the best?
