Well having changed my fan clutch this morning everything was going great, thought id take the car out for a test to see if the new clutch fan would have a say in how hot my car got.

Drove to kettering, all of a sudden the gearbox decided it didn't want to change gear and for some reason my engine temp was very erratic, going from 84 to 103 then back down depending on if i was going around a corner or not.

so limped the car home, turned the engine off only to notice smoke and the smell of burning plastic coming from around the battery area of the engine. on closer inspection the cable tie holding the engine loom in place had snapped (most likely from age) and the burning smell was actually my engine loom cooking away on the passenger side turbo.

how pissed off am i at this very moment in time.

Now i really am considering selling / breaking her. getting sick to the hind teeth of repairing one thing after another with no let up in site.

So if anyone is interested drop me a PM with your offer, i wont lie about what needs doing to her but she does have a lot of good stuff, so serious offers only, she does have tax and test.

stop being a silly man .... get it sorted ..

its my daily driver i cant have her off the road too long, and i have no way of getting another engine loom right this moment in time, she still needs welding work before her next MOT not fussed about the respray at the moment, im still not 100% on this heating issue. the list is getting bigger no matter how much i fix on it.

I think i would be better off cutting my losses, either breaking her and getting one with out all the major head ache, or just stepping away from the 300zx completely for a while. in weather like this i really dont want to be limited to bus's and taxi's

Why not try and find a nice NA, something in good condition can be had for little money, probably give you alot less trouble than this TT. You dont seem to have much luck with them I have to say but that might be down to the condition you buy them in?

Sorry to hear about it though mate hope you dont leave the zed scene! Just get a good one next time!

i was in a similar position 8 years ago...id had 4 engine/rebuilds the lot, even resprayed twice.i must of spent well over 20k,then my missus got pregnant and all that money had to go elsewhere.

for me the nissan 300zx tt wasnt and couldnt be a daily driver even tho i would of loved it to be,i was forever thinking shit i dare not take this anywhere, there was always something not right, or it would OVERHEAT lol or something.

saying all that i could never sell my car coz on the last rebuild i bought a brand new block off nissan which cost me 8-10k,id only drove it 1.5k when i noticed my turbo had disintegrated and i had a hard pipe full of silver dust.-the rest is history...its only now im wanting it back but only as a bank holiday/odd day out car.

i run around in a fiat stilo abarth 2.4...a great car loads of toys, loads of nippy power and a grand for a 10 year old car,im on my 2nd abarth and keeping my eyes out for a newer model.

the reliability in the 300zx is pretty poor if you need it as a main car imo,and i would of said that 10 years ago never mind nearly 20yrs

saying all this tho there is no car i have ever driven which puts a smile on my face like a zed---EVERYTIME--(which is why i will never sell mine)but i would never trust it as a main car!!!

My problems actually stem from cheap parts failing and causing a bigger issue in the process, first was the thermostat failing which ended up causing all kinds of stupid expencive fixes, and today was 20 year old engine loom cable tie causing my harness to fall down and meet the turbo.

The cherry red zed i had apart from the body work issues, ran like a dream and was very reliable. i swopped that to help a fellow zedder out. In all honesty the this blue one just seems like bad luck to own, the turbos are fine though, the engine is fine and running sweetly, there is still some rust issues that need sorting out, but now the biggest problem is the damn engine loom, unless i get that changed im not sure if the gearbox has given out or its actually due to the EFI harness melting, the car still drives, but the engine temp is all over the place and the gearbox doesnt change up into 3rd or 4th and the fuse is ok this time.

i actually find they are reliable as long as they are maintained well and not "ragged" everywhere. my issues are from small things causing major problems.

it was always JUST the small things for me back then, ptu, overheating etc etc....it was sooooooo frustrating and i no exactly how you feel.

good luck it seems you could do with some for the summer so you can enjoy your car.

this time round for me ive gone with get the electrics sorted......300zx electrics-heat -age...bad combination on the 300.mechanical the 300 should be bullet proof lol,im sat with my fingers ,toes and legs crossed now ha!

right, think the best couse of action is to strip the engine loom off the car and see if the damage is repairable or not. will report back in a bit once ive got it off the car.

hmm seems i might of been let off lightly, engine loom appears from all intent and purpose like nothing but the outer protective plastic sleeve took the damage, thats melted but the wires them selves appear to be fine.

So by the looks of it, although i melted the outer protective hard plastic accordion sleeve, the loom it self survived. my only assumption now is the gearbox has failed, car still starts and drives, but only 1st and 2nd gear plus reverse

Also take it the reason i had erratic engine temps, was the fact i was screaming the ass of the engine going up hills to get it to move due to the gear box failing.

strange though gearbox is displaying all the symptoms of what happened when the fuse was blown, but with out the fuse being blown, i get reverse, 1st and 2nd, but no 3rd or lock up.

i have secured the loom out of the way for now, will need to get something capable of covering the exposed cable inside, i think this is the left hand Auto loom from z1 as it was mega long, hence the reason it ended up flopping down to the turbo when the cable tie gave out. just seems bad timing coupled with the gearbox going.

Oh a plus note i have (i assume) a spare Auto box in the garage (the one i removed from the car and changed, then found it was a blown fuse ) so im hoping if i change that, ill have a working zed again.

Fecking cars.

Steams where are you? and what are you doing tomorrow? lol

Take it you might not want the manual conversion now??

engine loom is good, gearbox is fecked, i might actually need it sooner than expected. just need to get this bloody sky and bank charge out the way.

  • Author

well after a sit down and think and cooling my head from throwing my dummy about a bit, plan of attack is, get manual gearbox, drive a limpy car about till then, do conversion. then its a race to get the car sorted for the MOT. looks like ill be going JAE with a patch work car lol

good man ... but i know how u feel m8 its crap when cars do things like this

but push on and get a manual kit fitted ... best thing

its just been one of those days, i was so chuffed with changing the fan clutch and seeing nice low temps then the bloody gearbox goes tits up, the temp needle is all over the place on my after market gauge and then pull over to see smoke and a burning plastic smell from under the bonnet. :(

also the closeness to japshow an JAE as well.

If you sold up to buy another, you might end up having all teh little problems again.

At least with this one, you'll know they've all been sorted.

Keep going dude.... (But give me first dibs when you do sell it:tongue_smilie:)

Ive had my import TT since 2001 and only thing thats ever gone wrong is the water pump bearing (twice) and a sticky relay on back off fusebox, THANK F**K!!

You know that kind of talk is just asking for trouble lol, shhh zeds have ears

Sorry to hear of your latest woes Ian - and I hope you get them sorted (which, being the capable chap you are, you surely will matey!)....

.....And I have to agree with you on the ZX reliability issue; essentially they are reliable cars - for what they are - it's a Nissan after all. I have been fortunate with both of my ZXs and still do not have the slightest worry in taking my ZX on a long trip. Sure it's not my daily driver anymore, but I have still covered 1500+ miles in a week on the odd holiday jaunt and the car was nothing short of superb.....

Hang in there matey; I reckon you've come too far to quit now!!

Richard:thumbup1:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Ian if your temp is moving all over the place is it getting air in the system.

See it a lot when 1st change water anti freeze maybe air or bubbles causing irratic temp.

Get a manual and then start worrying about clutches lol.

Hope u sort it mate.

it was only doing the erratic temp only today AFTER i changed the fan clutch and only once i lost the gears from the gearbox? oh and my engine loom heated up, though that might also be the problem, large amounts of heat in the wiring loom would make the voltages do strange things so the consults software and my after market gauge was only acting on the new voltages.

OK wth, did a gearbox diagnostic on the car, no new faults, apart from the existing one that i already new about (lock up solenoid fault) double checked the fuse, went over all fuses in the engine bay.

going to take the car out in a min as its cold and see if the heat from the loom touching the turbo had an effect on my gear changes? or my gearbox is well and truly stuffed.

Either way im getting a manual for it again. this time it is going on, feel like im living on a knife edge with this auto box. will let you all know how this test drive goes.

Scrap it

Im gonna scrap/break/sell 2 zeds

They give you nothing but problems from the run you have had

tbh im coming close to doing that. since 2008 when i got my first, i think ive only ever had 1 year of pain free motoring with my zeds.
