Hey all. I'm a nasty horrible person that wants to buy a 300zx and chop it up :(

basically, I'm attempting to rwd my civic, I looked at honda engines but most rotate the wrong way and the s2k has nearly a 10" shorter wheelbase than the EK hatch so that would mean an expensive custom propshaft and fabbing 10" of trans tunnel plus i want a turbo so thats more expense right there - so i started looking around at other cars with a similar wheelbase and the 300zx is less than 2" difference, nearlt the same track width, has plenty of power, turbos as standard and still has japanese reliability

it's a bit of a crazy project, but I dont fancy spending thousands of pounds doing a k series swap just to park up next to 30 other guys at a show who've done exactly the same

Nothing wrong with that mate, besides which when you've lived with a zed for several years and all the BS that zed ownership entails, most guys (I'm sure) want to cut the bloody thing up!

lol. Good luck to you mate.

you have choosen a great car for extracting parts from. check out the 300zx buyers guide too, it will tell you finicky things to check when buying. You should be able to get something for under £1500 if you shop around, as interior and bodywork dont need to be ideal I guess.

But, if you go look at a TT 300zx, and test drive it, you might find it hard to chop it up lmao

haha, thanks for all the kind replies guys, I was expecting a bit of a flaming :)

had a good read of the buying guide, thats given me some good info on what to look for.... itching to get my grinder and welder out now! :D

oh yeah were real friendly round here, which is why you will probally another good reason why you will end up driving the zed and realising that actually cutting it up and putting it in the homo civic is not as good an ide aas leaving the engine where it belongs in a sports car :P

Having cut many up myself, its all part of the fun!

I once sold a running Twin turbo minus the panels and interior etc to a fella for £700. He wanted it to transplant into a moggy minor.

He's got a build thread on retro rides, but i dont think he's got that far yet..

cheers jim - i'm on retrorides so i'll have a gander at that...

and all the people saying i should just drive the Zed, no chance, i'd be just like everyone else if i did that and i'm very much an "individual" (basically an attention whore :P)

:rofl::rofl:

All joking aside, wouldnt take much to make it 500bhp, and in a RWD civic which is loads lighter...

it will be a serious ride.

Have to keep us posted mate.

not sure but have you actually seen many zeds on the road? ive owned 5 since 2008, and only ever ran into one other 300zx on the road, so being "individual" isnt that hard to accomplish in a 300zx, also unless you go for the bog standard look or the wide arch look, "individual" is also very easy to achieve even when at a 300zx meet.

Oh and for a bit of fun

"I've owned 5 since 2008, and only ever ran into one other 300zx on the road" - I hope you stopped and said sorry.

:)

lol. I never see them on the road anymore. Thats kind of why I wanted one so bad lol

I commented today on it asking if he's got anywhere, so it should be near the top of the project section.

I've seen 3 or 4 in the local area quite regularly!

and bizarrely ryan, I need LWB as the civic has a massive 103.1" wheelbase!!

Or alternatively a SWB and a one piece prop. Cos as far as your neeeds are concerned the prop is the only difference between LWB and SWB 300ZX.

IMO you will find the conversion much easier with a one piece prop, rather than fabricating and welding suitable mounting points to the middle of your shell to support the two piece prop.

they are available from Zedworld

sounds like an interesting build, would be a total animal, being that the civic is way lighter, good luck in your search.

  • Author

pete, I'll be welding in the full transmission tunnel from the zed anyway, so all the mounting points should be there, but thanks for the tip anyway!

  • Author

wow, not seen that before (not a member on hondatech as there's too many know-it-all yanks for my liking) - I'm aiming to retain a lot more of the civic than that! I had considered just dumping the shell on another chassis, but that's not really a challenge, and you couldn't really call it a civic at the end of the project...

Sounds great to me! I love a car that is not what it seems.

A friend of mine had a metro with the 1.8 VVC engine in it would keep up with a TT Supra until about 70
