Noticed a lot of threads recently where the underside has rotted. TBH mine is pretty clean but its not a car I plan to use TBH just a project and unfortunatly not garaged.

What precautions should I take to stop underneath rot. Do you think a cover helps? I guess moisture just builds in the air anyway being outside.

Also does mine being a UK spec have any better UK weather resistance compared to JDM car.

I always use a Waxoyl type preserver applyed underneath the car and inside the panels, give that a go bud :)

Apparently there is no difference in weather resistance between the UK and Jap specs.

So, if you have a geniunely clean rot free UK Zed you're doing well.

I'd get the underside drenched in a spray on Waxoyl type product. And yes a cover will definately help protect the car from the elements if you can't garage it.

Agree with the Waxoyl but do not, repeat DO NOT use a car cover.

Had one on my Trans Am, several types actually over the years, and the one thing they all have in common is that they wreck the paintwork. Even a gentle wind moves the cover very slightly back and forward no matter how well it's tied down. Best case scenario you'll end up with light scratches all over, worst case (like me) the paint will have completely worn off from the high raised areas. I had to get the wing mirrors and spoiler completely re-painted as the paint had rubbed off down to the primer. Even had a one with the furry type lining and the same thing happened. One split in 2 in the rain and another ended up with tiny holes in it which let water in and then held the water to the car.

UK and JDM cars all have the same undersealing from the factory. So considering most ZXs are 16-20 years old they will require additional protection at this stage in their lives to prevent rusting; whether UK or JDM.

So if you do have a clean and fairly rust free car - best keep it that way!

I have a clean Uk spec as well, so whilst my car was at Jeff's last week, I asked him to underseal it for me. Well worth the £65 I'd say!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'd paint the floor pan (external) and waxoil the floorpan internal. Also all the inner box sections and flitches pump with waxoil. Thoroughly clean the arches also, including the lips and paint with black hammerite.

Also, do this on the HOTTEST summer day you can. Doing this in the winter or a cold day is just pointless as the wax will not flow properly.

....also, take off the targas and run a high pressure airline down the little drain holes. Make sure they are clear.

Mine lives in the garage and only comes out in the summer when the weather's dry. So I did't really need to do mine. But it's better done than not.
