Just been reading some vague news that seismic activity has increased at the Mt Katla site in Iceland (over that of the increased activity since Eyjafjallajoekull blow) and a significant earthquake has been reported as of yesterday.

Predictions are that she'll blow her lid on the 3rd of May. The volcano's located beneath a glacier some 3/4 of a kilometer deep. Apparently, the melting ice would cause a flood equivalent to the combined daily outflow of the river Nile and Amazon!

This volcano is 100 times larger than Eyjafjallajoekull and we could be in for a nuclear winter for quite some time when it does erupt....which is imminent!

Horahhh!!!!!

Whoa! We're going to Ibiza! Whoa! To escape the ashcloud!

You'll be going by boat then!

Apparently its only about 5 times the size. So nuclear winter no, no flights for a couple of months, maybe.

Sorry, magma chamber is 100 times larger.

It's the ash that it'll produce that will be the big killer. The glacier is huge and extremely deep.

Lost the bloody link to the seismology report. There are a few reports on abovetopsecret.com

Lots of links all over the place saying when Eyjafjallajökull blows Katla does also within a year, but Katla being 100 times larger than Eyjafjallajoekull and being in for a nuclear winter is complete tosh as its never managed it before.

Mine too. But the precursor to the eruption build up could last for some time. Any melting water in the glacier has to turn to super heated steam for some time before it has the power to blast through nearly 1km thick of ice.

I meant the magma chamber is 100 times bigger. The glacier is also enormous. It's not managed it before as the last eruption was about 100 years ago and average temperatures in the northern hemisphere dropped by a noticable amount.

i was gonna say it'll prolly put me out of a job but i'll be out of a job soon anyway as my company is fooking off out of the uk (DOH)!

then again since the last ash cloud we have been fookin busy, not just the catch up on passengers backlog but post ash flight inspections are taking so much time... full video boroscope on the engines, every conceivable filter is being removed and sent away for analysis, fluid samples from fuel/hydraulics/potable water/engine oils taken for analysis, all this on top of the standard maintenance schedule. the company 'spectro' that supply our sample jars must be rolling in it now!

if this does happen it will be interesting to see what reaction the aviation industry has to offer. im already planning my early retirement with my prototype design of propulsion, pitot static ports and anti erosion coatings... though i just need one of you lot to plough in a few hundred million so i can get things moving!

Have you had any interesting analysis reports back? Quite interested to know. Not sure how the filters work on hydraulic systems on airplanes. Do they have an external breather system as well as the obvious return and inline pressure filters?

good grief simon you really are a doom-sayer

Hardly. The government did that already!

If you can show me a factual believable quote other than that from some random guy from a scienceray.com thred that the magma chamber is 100 times bigger I'll say yes your right my mistake. Any beliveable sources all have it at ten times bigger at most.

Whats 100 years ago it last blew got to do with anything lol? Its just not big enough to cause a nuclear winter, its blown 3 times (properly) in the last 1000 years and not once managed it. Yes it may spew enough ash to drop temps by a few degrees but nothing more.

i was gonna say it'll prolly put me out of a job but i'll be out of a job soon anyway as my company is fooking off out of the uk (DOH)!

I heard SRT fecked off the Arabs during negotiations so the Arabs just said bye bye and went elsewhere. lol

...and you know better because? ;) It's well documented that Katla is a huge volcano and can cause a lot a devastation.

Because I'm not bacing my facts on one guy on scienceray.com :tooth:
