Id say it was pretty important to help direct airflow, i havent come a cross a car yet that it wasnt a benefit to have.

Massive debate this one mate, been done soooo many times too.

Numerous Zeds don't have one including myself and without any issue.

Some have claimed to have an issue once they removed it and some ain't.

It just wasn't there to direct airflow, it was also for safety to avoid fingers in moving blades!

If you car isn't suffering any problems with overheating, then leave it off :)

its simple really, all you have to do is pay attention to how the fan and cowling work

RAD-> COWLING --> FAN, thus no effect on directing airflow. now if it was

RAD-> FAN --> COWLING, then that shows that the cowling is directing airflow.

So as smithy quite rightly put, the cowling is just there to stop you making SAW 7

LOL at Saw 7..

I took mine off as I was getting angry with access when I was doing my PS pump, and never reinstated it. Think I'll leave it off.

my understanding on a shroud is the exit side is narrower than the front and this is there to enable the air to be compressed out thus increasing air flow which means better cooling of the rads surface area...for this reason mine stays:)

The man talks a lot of sense...

Jeff

mine doesnt have the shroud,

no heating issues.

and lol @ saw 7.

i have caught my finger in there, fortunately Nissan made it of plastic not metal :)

The photo below explains why a cowling is important, a zed will work without one of course as some guys here do not have one, however the diagram explains why you should.

How easy is it to fit one on with a koyo rad? I'm debating on putting one back on. I use to have one

Oh yes and they fit ok with larger rad too:nana2:

Jeff

Before I had my crazy spec engine build one of the first things I fitted was a koyo rad.I left the fan shroud off as soon as I fitted the new rad and when the car was in stationary traffic the coolant temp did rise but as soon as I put the fan shroud back on that problem did not happen again.I always have had a shroud fitted and for the above reason I now always will.

Jeff, your pic looks very much like a shroud with an electric fan, is that the case? :)

Nothing that clever matey, just a basic library picture used to explain the air flow issues that can arise.:D

Jeff

thanks for the info, think I'll reinstate mine. I have been meaning to ask the question for ages myself!
