Electrical problems and water ingress go hand in hand on any car and no less the zed especially with targa roofs.

Many owners have experience some level of water leak from the targa / door seals but in the vast majority of cases it is obvious as it shows up on the seats or your leg if your unlucky enough to be driving through big rain and it lets in.

So when we saw a zed with some odd electrical issues and a very wet passenger carpet the taga was an obvious suspect.

But when pulling the carpet back the area below the ecu was very dry.

So with everything initially looking ok we checked out the targa drain points

targadrain.jpg

Now what your really want to see is a puddle of water appear on the floor just under the front sill area

wateronfloor.jpg

But what we got was very different, , a very wet set of relay and loom connectors

We removed the A post trim and set about checking the drain tubing for any pin holes Pic.5,6,7,

With no issues higher up we took more panels out and eventually found the culprit here, the final stage sill drain pipe disconnected

Quite how this had come detached from the connector to the sill drain is a mystery, however athough a real neck and wrist breaker to get in the deed was done and tested, now all the targa drain water stays where its is supposed to OUTSIDE.

Id like to know too, might check to see if one of them car fire extinguishers fit in it.

Its for a flare. Its only aloud in japan for when you brake down i think?

There ilegal in this country as its class as a fire arm ;)

if anyones interested i still have the flare from my car... forgot to give it to its new owners lol

My old car had one in too... thought it would be safer to set it off than just throw it in the bin :) (p.s. if you do set one off, be prepared for smoke... LOTS of smoke!!)

Thanks for the info Car.Mad dont think I would like to have a flare stowed in the cockpit lol.Think I might try to find a very small fire extinguisher that might fit in the holder.

Jeff, im not quite sure where this picture is taken

losetargahose.jpg

but how could the water you poured in at the top come out of the bottom if the pipe is disconnected

(I'm assuming this is the same pipe?)

Ok the the picture was taken looking up, I can see how you would mistake it for looking down.

Imagine looking upwards along side of the glove box that where its was.

Jeff

I 've had the same problem now, can you tell me where that pipe in the passenger footwell goes, i know you said it was a real neck and wrist breaker, but a hint would help.

Cheers

  • 2 months later...

I've had issues with the car steaming up etc and found the dreaded puddle.

My pipe was disconnected as shown in Jeffs pics, I spent an hour scrabbling around the white connector block holder but couldn't find where the pipe should connect to.

I've extended the pipe and have had to run it into the sill until I can get more info.

The white connector block houses four connectors, one of which is black, a yellow and silver wire has broken away from the block and theres no room to join it.

Everthing is working fine and I wondered if anyone knew what this wire connects to?

Edited by plazmaduck

Hmmm, I think the connection may have revealed it's purpose - the autobox now takes ages to change up and then lunges the car forward when it finally does change.

The box has been flawless up until now and I know there is a control box for the auto located in this area.

Will try to reconnect the wire and see what happens!

Update: In addition to the above, when starting the engine, the 'power' light would flash several times. I found the wire next to the snapped one also loose, so checked the whole lot.

I've hardwired the two wires and normality has been resumed! It also occured to me earlier, that running the drainage pipe into the sill wasn't going to help, even short term as the sills are at the same level as the floor :headvswal

I still need to know the route the pipes take to exit the car, as no amount of scrabbling around gives me any clues!!

o nice post jeff, i know were to look now was on ages when i found some water down there and couldnt see were the water was coming from myself

my issues were in the drivers side but id say the passenger side is the same setup. I had to replaced the fusebox as it was badly corroded and all seems to be working ok, except my indicators and electric windows which are both completly dead on both sides (hazard lights work ok) - JeffTT have you any suggestions what to check?

well spotted jeff,, and again many thanks for sorting out my zed it drives better than ever b4 sheer joy driving it back to newcastle, thanks ,, ps still have nt got the alarm to work and turbo timer now not working seems to be no power to either ???
