Found out what that tapping noise was...

Well, got 18miles out of the new car, then at 60mph, the engine went bang......

Funny thing is, it didn't even sound like the bottom end, first it lost power, then there was a strange crunch noise, followed by smooth running for about 10seconds, no Check engine light, then a very load crunching noise, followed by locking of the engine loads of smoke and a trail of oil up the road.

First time id driven it as well as i was on my way to the MOT.

I think its the big end gone due to the fact the oil pan has a hole in it, what type of damage will i be looking at, luckily (depending how you look at it) i was slowing down to pull over after id heard the first crunch, so had my foot on the clutch. i cant afford a new engine after just paying for the car, also i have new one on the way due soon. i have about £350ish to play with, do i cut my loses and sell it as a rolling shell, or is it worth trying to fix it my self?

Really gutted to be honest, i knew it needed some attention, but it really didn't sound like it was Knocking, just tapping...

Nice intro to the world of the Z though.

you may be able to find a tt engine for 350 quid mate. they do tend to be 500-700 but you never know.

Hi, is it a turbo or non turbo engine as i have a turbo bottom end (58,000 miles on it) and also a complete non turbo engine.

its a NA bud, im not sure what the deal with me Buying on here is, i know i cant sell due to not being registered, an i was going to register but now need to replace an engine

i had a look on Zed world, the 1500 price tag is just too much this side of December, the first post was supposed to say i have a new Little one on the way, but although me head thought it, me fingers didn't type it lol.

If you can do the work yourself then I dare say you can get a second hand NA engine for about £200 - £300?

Ive never changed an engine before, and lack the engine hoist to do it, might be able to borrow a engine hoist, but would have to check on that, and yeah id give it ago lol. the misses is adamant that she wants to get it fixed, what kind of damage am i going to be looking at? its looking like its definitely con rod failure, but i suppose it depends where the end of the rod has embedded its self, the engine just stopped very harsh from doing around 1500rpm to nothing in a split second, so not even sure if its damaged the valves or anything, im hoping that the cam belt didn't snap as this would limit the damage i would imagine.

have to wait till around Tuesday before the car gets back home from the recovery people before i can get it up on stands and have a look underneath to see where the oil is coming from. So far im thinking, possible cylinder head damage, piston damage, crank shaft damage, oil sump damage.... but i could be wrong and the whole engine is just too unrecoverable.

TBH, if you're wanting to salvage the engine (heads) then you'll spend more in sundries assembling it all than the budget that you have. Head gasket set, timing belt, water pump and everything else will run you over £300. A head reface will cost you about £100 per head.

My next few weekends are pretty chocka but id be happy to come give you a hand done engine swaps a few times, im sure if there was tea and biscuits then a few of the lads on here would be happy to donate some time and man power:)

With offers like that flying around I'd consider moving 400 miles south! Very generous indeed dude.

There will always be offers in the north aswell mate!

Im not that knowledgable about the engine, but if it was man power required id help!

On topic anyways........My car when ibought it was more of a tapping, but about 200miles later it was knocking very very hard and then blow as i was taking it to doncaster.

Hope you get it sorted soon mate. Just surf around on ebay etc checking for an engine.

sorry to hear the bad news mate, I know you were hunting for a good one for a while. Were there no symptoms prior to the bang?

tea biscuits and a bacon butty can all be arranged, just need to source an engine, if people are up for it?

When it arrives on Tuesday its going strait in the garage and going up on stands so i can take the sump off and have a real look at the damage, would i be able to remove the crank with the engine in? or is that a engine out job? reason i ask, is that way i can get the pistons out and see if there is any damage to the cylinders / cylinder head.

Stellaz, that tapping sound i had to start with turned into that knocking sound that is in your knocking sound video, about 3 minutes before the engine went. (though i still think the tapping was something completely different).

We were really looking forward to the Z but within 18miles the dream got shattered.... :( it was going to be a small Restoration project as it is anyway, due to it not being looked after it from the last lot of owners. its not the prettiest Z, but given time it would of been stunning. just have no frigging funds till after new year due to the new arrival coming on or around the 10th of December.

Don't get me wrong, we didn't go into the sale completely blind, i knew there was a tapping sound, and i knew it would require some work. there was just no knocking when i brought it, it was just tapping, had it trailered to my home, then on the way to the MOT, just to see what it was going to fail on, and give me a ruff estimate of the work to get it road worthy (it would of failed the MOT anyway due to a short in the RH Front light cluster) but at least i would of had a better idea of what needed doing, and to get a garage opinion on the tapping.

ZX-TT i would really appreciate that, and yes tea and biscuits and a meal for anyone who helped, ooh and a very big thank you too.

There was a tapping, but sounded very similar to noisy tappets, not very loud at all, then all of a sudden 3 mins before the engine gave it, very loud knocking, me an the misses looked at each other, then a crunch noise, and the misses said "you best pull over" started to slow down, and just as i released the clutch, a large and very load bang / grinding noise then the engine just froze and died, followed by billowing smoke from the rear and bonnet, big trail of oil up to where i parked up. im just thanking my self that i was taking it easy rather than trying to "drive the tapping off"

Mines went at 60mph on the motorway.............that was fookin scary, smoke out the rear and front, started coming in the car too, couldnt see a freaking thing.lol!

lol yeah i know what you mean, the smoke was very heavy, surprised those behind didn't crash, i got out and it looked like a small nuke had gone off down the road...

it was at 3am when mines went mate so roads where empty:D!

But atleast you and the mrs are alright and safe.

I wish you all the best with this, just hang on in there, mines is nearly finished, been a bumpy journey but one to look forward to which im sure you will aswell mate.

Good luck:D!

it does sound like tappets when you are in the car, only when you pop the engine does it sound like a knocking

Worth £20 subsciption, theres a guy (csaab) in bristol with a good n/a engine in 'parts for sale' (breaker thread) for £150....

Right, im going to go have a look around see what the best price i can get for a decent engine. if it comes to it, ill just wait until after new year and speak to JeffTT about one of his reconditioned ones, least he can put it for its MOT as well after, plus peace of mind that nothing untoward is going to happen 18miles down the road.

Anyone know if im allowed to buy from the for-sale section? as it does appear that CSAAB has an engine whole for sale, i just don't want to break any forum rules :Cry:

  • Author

aarrrggghh!, i know people say its only £20, but that £20 could go towards me new engine.... lol, but then i could save over £150 getting that one off of CSAAB, ain't going to have the cash until end of the month, so not sure he would even hold it that long.... aaarrrrggghhh!!! as stated, decisions.

Only thing with subbing is, i already have the stickers and the tax disk holder lol, they came with the car.
