After a short journey home tonight, about 10 miles and only a maximum of 6000rpm on two occasions on low boost, I noticed when I got home there was smoke coming from the engine, lifted the bonnet and there was oil everywhere.

the dipstick had popped 2" out, spraying oil everywhere.

Its never done this before, whats caused it?

Thanks, Dan

Surely it would be an increase to push the dipstick out?

You'd think so eh?

But the reason i asked is, when i knackered the engine on my shorty, the oil pressure dropped to nothing after spitting the dipstick. Turned out to have blown piston rings and land failure.

when you say a drop in pressure i assume you mean as soon as the stick pops out? If there is no dramatic pressure drop though what does it mean?

It could be PVC valves or something more sinister. Basically there's been an increase in crank case pressure and it's escaped by popping the dipstick. Not 100% sure but this could be pcv valves or possibly hg or as shrek has said worn piston rings meaning exhaust Gasses are what's causing the pressure. What state is the oil that's in it in? Do a search on here as I'm sure this problem has been posted before...

Like what Stricker said, exhaust gases getting past the pistons and raising the crank pressure. Put the dipstick in, start the engine and watch what the dipstick does.

A compression check on all your cylinders would either confirm or elliminate this possible cause.

/\/\/\/\/\ Zoggs absolutely right, you have piston ring failure and the gasses are pressurising the crank case and thus pops out the dipstick. A compression test will comfirn low readings on the piston(s) concerned, usually the rear two cylinders as these are prone to overheating which causes the rings to sieze in the piston groove. Start saving your money.

When was the last time you checked the oil? You may of just not put the dip stick in right. I agree with all the above because i lost an engine due to blow bye in the crank case but also had other tell tail signs like bellowing smoke from the exhaust and the engine went lumpy. I would clean it up, give it a run then see the result. If nothing occurs, bonus but as old Zed said...always have funding for the unexpected with these cars;)

Pop off the oil filler cap when the car is idling. If it starts pulsing fumes from it, you've got a very tired engine that needs a rebuild.

I would go straight for a leak down test or compression test to be sure

1st thing to do is a leak test on all the cylinders (different to a compression test) this will show any problems if there r any.

also check oil make sure its not mixed this would point to head gaskets.

Tonight, I used the car again as normal, this time the dipstick hasnt popped out, does this mean it is most probably a freak occurance, or could it still mean the start of a headache?

Freak occurances don't happen like that. You have a problem somewhere if it's blowing oil out of the tube!

Was it the engine dipstick or the autobox dipstick?

The autobox one can do it when it is slightly overfilled.

His is manual.

yes i refilled with oil :-s

as i said, you probably didn't seat it right. Just watch what happens bud!!
