I have a dilema guys.

I have an E30 318is and a spare engine.

I have an R5 turbo.

I WANT a 300zx!

I would like a 200sx

i cant sell the bimmer, but the 5 is worth about £1500

insurance is no longer a problem.

This is my dilema, my choices are.

1. Supercharge the spare engine,

2. Get a volvo 440 turbo engine and put it in the 5

3. Sell the 5 and get a 200sx

4. Or sell the 5 and get a 300zx

Ive looked at an auto 200sx and 300zx and was much more impressed with the Z.

I was wondering what you guys would do?

I need your opinions especially between the 200 and 300 please, as your the nissan experts ofcourse ;)

1. Not much power to be gained.

2. The r5 engine is better

3. Good car but look like a boat

4. Look great, i would say save around 3 grand for a nice one. You will horror stories on here about the zed, but a well serviced one will be reliable. Zeds are pure class

This is a 300zx Forum mate! - The likely result will be to buy a 300zx!

IMO - get a 300zx! Its in a different league to the 200sx - a higher league!

Would say the 200sx is a more chuckable B road car though and cheaper in many respects to own and run.

Not as outright fast though & looks nothing special - unlike the ZX

I thought it would favour the Z, i just wanted another opinion. Im up for a project, but if i bought a Z i wouldn dare take it apart until i got familiar with it.

Ive always prefered the looks of the 300, but i get told id suit a 200 better, dont know why that is,

The choice is simple really isnt it.

I was looking to have about £3K when the time came.

i`ve got

escort rs turbo 90 spec

series 1 rs turbo convertable

300zx tt manual uk

200sx s13 turbo

just collect them all.my wish list is

3 door cosworth

rs500 cosworthj

2.8i brooklands capri

rs1600i

r35 gtr

911gt2

911gt3

and you say you cant decide

Get rid of the R5. Really inferior engine with serious heat problems. 440 engine makes it slightly better.....but it's still a Renault 5. If I was to have a turbo Renault from that era, it would be the 21.

Yup, ditch the r5 to the ebay mob, buy a zed+ keep the bmw as 'back up' for when you need to be reminded why you bought a zed.

Yeh, i'm also biased + have driven loads of other cars+ still got a ZXTT as a daily driver.

The 5 is affordable, a 21 turbo is pricey. plus most people wont know what it is.

I have had nothing but problems with the 5 overheating and carb problems, its never ending. Thats why the volvo engine is a better option, on the fueling side anyway, its EFI.

The beemers on the list to go now aswell, the damn steering lock just gave up, had to hotwire the car to get it home, not happy about that.

Zeds must come with their own problems though, are they easy to work on?

Erh!? EVERYONE knows what an R5 is! Not many know that Renault did a 4wd Turbo 21!

Thats what im saying, it wont be recognised.

All depends what your budget is really, i had my 200sx S14a for nearly 5 years and spent very little on it probably around a grand for services and maintenance, a 300zx is a lot more expensive to run imo, and more prone to go wrong due to age and complexity of them.

They are both very nice cars to drive but the 200sx is definately more agile due to weight and seems more a buzzy turbo car whereas the 300zx is a brute of car and is great in a straight line but unless you have a fairly good suspension setup ie lots of new parts as these are old cars it is not a twisty b road car.

So if you want some fun in a nice handling car get a 200sx s14a if you want grunt and looks get the 300zx.

nice to have something new,

obv this is a 300 forum, so views are going to be a bit biest!

having owned both 200sx & 300zx, they are both good cars.

200 is a bit more practical, the Z looks bit nicer standard tho (and is FASTER!)

dont get an auto tho, which ever car you pick, as you cant feel/utilize the power.

200s are cool, especially if you get a drifty one :)

Thanks, it was the s14a i was after, a manual if i go for a 200, a purple one, looks lovely.

The 300 i need to learn a bit more about, i understand theres alot of options you can do.

If possible i would like a SWB TT Manual T-bar, but i bet thats the one everyone wants

i used to love the R5, been in one with about 250bhp, once it had tractio it was quick as fook

Great car, loads of tuning gear for them (that why its the better engine IMO) and can be made reliable with correct mods. GT tuning for one can sort a sorted engine. I loved my 5.

R 21 turbo looks total crap, go for the Zed fella.:hyper:

is there such a thing as a reliable R5?

S14a, the SR20 engine has loads of potential, and theres plenty of parts available.

smaller than the VG30, more room to work on, more parts available, bit more reliable aswel.

VG30 is a powerhouse tho :D

Can be reliable around 200 bhp mark. Mine was 280 and was off the road more than on lol. When at 200-215 odd i had no trouble with engine, only clutch once a year.

280hp from a c1j engine? thats impressive, mines got a TD04 turbo on it and i guesse about 180, not had it dynod yet though.

Ok, i kinda made my mind up.

Im going to get a 300, i know your all glad :D

But, depending on how much i can save i might keep the renault aswell in a mates garage to eventually do the volvo conversion.

Sound good?

The s14 just wont quench my desire i think. i wanted a 300 first.

i wanted a 300 first.

yea same here, i wanted a 300 when i was 19.

had a S13 instead and built up to a 300 lol

  • 1 month later...

i currently have a 300 and a 200.

very different cars to drive. you sure can feel the weight in the 300.

i sold my daily drive 200 around 9 months ago which was running around 280bhp and that was deffinatly faster than my current 300 which is at the moment stock ish and an auto.

obviously once you start tuning the sky is the limit as i would think my 200 project car would distroy almost any 300 :D

you will spend alot more on the 300 both in fuel, repairs and insurane

my view would be to go for the 200 (s14) if you intend to use it as a daily drive or the 300 as a weekend toy

The S13 200SX was gorgeous when released and a perfect introduction to the jawdropping Z32 that was to follow.

Unfortunately a good S13 is very hard to find and the looks have dated too quickly.

The S14 unfortunately really side the side down in the looks department and the car became a non-event from a desirability point of view. The engineering is great though, if you can ignore the looks (which is not too difficult).

If possible i would like a SWB TT Manual T-bar, but i bet thats the one everyone wants

A bit like this one then???

Ive lost interest in 200s now really. Dont know if thats a good thing of a bad thing.

But im tidying up the renault 5 ready to sell over xmas. If i get what i want for the car i plan to have about £3k to spend.

Gruntpa, loving that car. I always wonder whats rusting behind skirts and bumpers though when theyve been flushed in :D Im sure you took precautions though.

So if anyone knows of a black or white 300 preferebly in my price range. Let me know

Should be able to get a reasonable one for 3k. Try and find the best you can regardless of colour, even if you have to get an auto...as you can change to a manual at a later date. You should be able to get a pretty good autoTT for that.
