Is there a difference between manual & automatic ECU's??

Would a Devlin chipped & socketed 1991/92 NA ECU be a direct fit on my '90 NA manual?

Featured Replies

Yes there is a difference... you CAN use auto ECU's in a manual car but CAN NOT use manual ECU's in an auto car, because there is not chip to control the auto ECU... and Yes the ECU will fit in your car...

Nice one, thanks :)

Anything i should look out for when swapping them over?

Best to do on a RR after?

most chips are pre-programmed with just a few uprated settings (Fueling etc) so you should be fine with RR! If you notice a negative performance then yes a RR or get it on Conzult/ Datascan ECU Diagnostics to see what is really going on in there

As it is for a NA there is not that much that can be changed. Ignition timing and A/F mapping changes will hopefully result in some more useable torque in the lower to mid rev range. Don't think you'll need a rolling road session as you can't alter the parameters on the chip anyway.

As for the ECU swap, make sure that when when you tighten up the big blue ECU connector that you don't over tighten it and that it goes on true and straight. A lot of people experience all sorts of strange electrical problems if they've over tightened the connector or it isn't sitting straight. Hand tight is good enough.

Good luck and many happy miles! :)

Regards,

my car is an automatic, and NA.

i am just doing the manual conversion, and also swapping to TT.

i am using the NA loom.

im ok to use my manual TT ECU in the car now yes?

I'd be more worried about the wiring looms, you'll. Need to change them , but

Yeah you can use the manual ecu.

the looms are the same, just the NA loom doesnt have boost solenoids, so it will always be on safety boost. when you fitt a electronic boost controller this overides that tho.

so if fine to use the manual TT ECU, on the NA converted to TT, and also converted to manual

there are more differences.

2 important differences are the wiring for the electrical fan and wiring for the fuelpump control module.

As you will have to use the TT fuelpump control module and fuelpump in your conversion, you will need to rewire this as well.

Another difference is taht the TT has a 2 speed elec. fan, the Na hasn't.

But a TT ECU can be reprogrammed to control a NA fan.

can you elabatate on this more please?

is the electrica fan on all the time usually? i can just wire that to come on all the time, sounds easy,

what about the fuel pump tho? will the NA loom not tell the pump to turn on or something? or tell it not to provide enough fuel?

how can i resolve that

>> is the electrica fan on all the time usually? i can just wire that to come on all the time, sounds easy,

No, on a TT the additional elec. fan turns on at low speed at a coolant temp of 95 Celcius and will go to high speed when coolant reaches 105 Celcius

if you put a NA fan in it will only have the high speed option and will turn on too late...if at all

The TT ECu can be reprogrammed to have the fan turn on earlier though.

>> will the NA loom not tell the pump to turn on or something? or tell it not to provide enough fuel?

the TT has a 2 speed fuelpump.

It will run at low speed when cruising/idling and on high speed when needed (under boost or when accelerating)...this also is controlled by the ECU and the TT fuelpump controller.

from the top of my head you will have to run an extra wire from the ECU to the pump controller.

or use a TT engine harness and TT interior harness

hi mate, yea iv just read the guide thing above, the TT is 3 speed, and the NA is 2 speed. the NA pump controller is 2 speed, but thhe TT pump will work fine on 2 speed.

but i dont know if a TT ECU will work with the NA pump controller?

TT ECU requires a wire to be run from the ECU to the pump controller, to get the third speed to the pump.

but im wondering if its ok to use the TT ECU, the TT or NA controller, without wiring the extra wire, as the pump will run on 2 speeds fine?
