I am having a engine rebuild and have taken loads of pics.

I thought I would start a thread and share my pics and progress through this.

All the work is getting done at Custom exotics, but though It would start stripping what I could off the engine at home in the garage.

I have never done this before so It felt a bit daunting, but after a while I was enjoying It and was pleased I started stripping it myself ( felt I was learning more about my engine by doing this)

I have managed to remove the drive belts, radiator, AC radiator, PS pump, AC compressor, alternator. All the intercooler pipes removed along with the inlet pipes to the turbos, some were a right pain. All the electrical connections on the top removed and the ones round the side I could see as well. I found the heater matrix pipes were bloody hard to disconnect. I disconnected some boost hoses, but reckon there are a few more I have forgotten lol. I have been using the guides for engine removal from here and found them very helpful.

Looking at the amount of wires and hoses there are in the engine bay is scary, but I hope to simplify the bay a lot and make it look a lot less cluttered along with a bit of bling. If you ever seen DUBSPEC engine bay from the aussie forum then you know what I mean. I am aiming for something like that.

More stripping later this week, glad I'm labeling and taken loads of pics.

Here are a couple of pics of the car as it looks now down at Custom Exotics.

Thanks,

Ant

Ha ha - cool - well we have a source at reasonable cost - that's the main thing.

Thanks guys. Another mystery solved.

Very very nice... can you tell me where you got your polishing and chroming done and what they charged you for it?.

I am about to pick a load of bits up from someone locally who has had them three weeks and still not even given me a price so a reliable company would be really appreciated.

Madmax - I use a guy in Hounslow/Feltham area - but I guess that is tooo far from Portsmouth right?

How much stuff do you have matey - I will just call them first to make sure your not out of the frying pan into the fire - so to speak. Have you had a quote at all?

2 rocker box covers, door clasps, and a few pipes that go to the intercooler etc and a few misc bits but not that much. Now if the other lot dont deliver I have a whole box of bits. But I could get these bits up there first then see how it all pans out as I really dont think the local lot will do anything.

To be honest mate I wouldn't recommened this place to you. They said it would take 4 weeks and I could tell when i picked them up they were stil taking my bits out of the tank and had rushed the job through in the last few days.

I paid just over £400 for the lot, but the cost will be in the polishing work before hand to make them ready to be plated.

If you want to know the name of the place then PM me mate and i'll let you know who they are.

HTH.

Hmmmm - I just spoke to my guys and they have toooooo much on at the moment and could not guarantee your parts back 'before xmas'!!!!

The devil is in the detail - the preparation is the killer - I prep/polish all of my stuff myself and just get them to do the 'plating' basically so I don't experience this resistance/cost of the polishing/prep work. (Pretty standard response for the metal plating industry). They don't make much money (if any) out of this work so it is of minor importance to them.

Sounds like I would be hiking you out of the frying pan into the bonfire man - sorry!

Sounds like you should stick with your current supplier maybe - just apply some more pressure ;-))

Following this with interest - great thread and pics!

Thought I would put up a few more pics.

The engine is virtually ready to go in, just need to bolt on the flywheel, clutch and gearbox. I'm really liking the candy orange on the engine parts, the cambelts will be covered so you won't see the blue.

The engine bay has been smoothed off and sprayed black.

Also I forgot to say that I relocated the main fusebox about a year ago, trying to simplify the engine bay and declutter it. The battery will be going in the boot and I will be relocating the fuel filter too. I stripped the throttle linkage down and cleaned all the springs etc which I think make a really big difference.

The hardest decesion was whether to keep the aircon:confused1:

I'll be back down working on it Monday and may well be dropping the engine in for a test fit :cool3:

Well I hope you enjoy the pics.

Cheers,

Ant

Is the Plenum & Cam Cover going to be painted too?

- and why did you go for the Greddy timing belt?

I will be fitting a timing belt top cover instead of the normal cam covers, as I don't want to hide the chroming I've had done. That has been painted candy orange too, but not sure what colour to go with on the other top cover, orange or black.

As I had uprated the internals I went with the stronger belt which was probably overkill.

Thanks for the comments.

Timing belt top cover is good :) I think you should defo go Orange for the Plenum cover - maybe you could have black accented lettering? whichever you decide though, it's gonna look lush :) .. About the belt, I was just concered as there was a post about timing belts a while back, and I just hope the belt is upto it, as has been said from JeffTT, that people can fall for the aftermarket hype and the teeth not lining up properly e.t.c.. Would be a shame to ruin such a beaut of an engine.

This is what makes me want to own a 300 again.

That looks fooking great. Top job there!!!!!!!!!
