Whats the major benifits of an ECU and where on the car would this be located? Are they expensive?

Featured Replies

Erm your car will only work if it has one, i'd be worried if yer didn't have one.

It's under a wooden board on the passenger side footwell and not expensive if you need to replace as many around second hand.

kool, just making sure i found that one anyways. Does and upgraded one really give you alot more horsepower? whats the main benfit or upgrading it?

the standard ecu cannot be remmaped as such but u can can get a upgrade chip to increase power etc if that's what ur thinking off ?

A remapped performance Chip allows you to run higher boost than standard. It Alters the Fuel and timing maps to improve power and make it safer at higher boost levels. They also tend to remove the Speed Limiter, Raise the rev limiter and alter the VVT settings.

While it does'nt give you a large power increase on its own, it does allow you to increase the boost higher safely, which is where the biggest power increase comes from.

A Chip and boost increase to 14psi (with boost jets or Boost controller) would typically net you around a 60-80hp increase.

John Dixon, Andyp, DTA and others all supply remapped chips for £60-£120

as above^^ if ur'e looking to upgrade see if u can get hold of andy P, or John

Dixon here on the forum for advice on chips

what steps would need to be taken before getting a chip and boost controller fitted? what would i need to have fitted first

First above EVERYTHING that I think all people overlook is, is the engine actually running 100%?

First and foremost, get the car checked on conzult. Have a balance test done, have ALL the sensor checked. If any are out or range, replace them, or clean up any connectors. Replace the plugs with NGK PFR6B-11B, poss get the injectors cleaned.

Then get an uprated air flilter, then get at reflashed chip with the new fuel mapping. Check the car again on conzult, then get your boost controller fitted.

That's the way I am doing it anyway. I think too many people neglect the sensors and simply fit a chip and boost controller without making sure the engine is running 100%

A remap or chip on it's own will not give you anymore performance. However as Legrath said it will allow you to run higher boost levels with a boost controller.

Also be aware that if your engine is 'tired' and of 'substantial' mileage, such an upgrade can finish them off. If your car is an import, and the mileage is showing a nice comfortable mileage (kilometerage) say 60,000 ish............unless documented, take it with a pinch of salt. Most are clocked before they leave the motherland. Do as FunkySI has stated and ensure your engine is running tip top. If it was me I would also fit a proper oil pressure gauge which would then give you a condition for your big ends, (if worn the pressure usually falls off dramatically when hot) and also go for a compression test.

60 BHP???

thats an awful lot!!

i was thinking an extra 30?

Stock boost is only 9PSi. You're adding a 1/3 more boost. That's quite a bit over stock.

It is correct. You will see 60-80hp increase with chip and boost upgrade.

The car feels TOTALLY different to how it was at 9psi. In fact, when you turn the boost down to 9psi (electronic controller) the car feels so damn slow! :mac1:
