its no a bad thing to start it and let it run once a week as it helps keep oil in all the right places and stops belts etc from going hard in one place !

it means you have an air lock unfortunately matey ! try running the car from cold for a good 20 mins with the cap off and keep topping up the water until it doesn't go down anymore and there is no more air bubbles emerging !

you can access the top bolts from underneath without dropping the gearbox by removing the battery for the n/s and the starter for the o/s. If this fails then no you just let the back of the box down on to a jack slowly without removing the gear linkage !
