looking for mass storage?
thats not the point though :) its cheap upgradeable mass storage, with fault tolerance thrown in, If we want to go balls deep, my play thing (ie work) is a 64 10k fibrechannel array with about 6tb of storage in one pool and 6tb in a 16 sata disk tray, 6 volumes in raid 5 with 4 hot spares, can pump out close to 12,000ops a second currently with expansion room for upto 512TB of disk space and 200,000 ops, plus it replicates out to paris in async mode :)

CPU upgrade question ...
what operating system? its a common flaw in windows 32 bit operating systems I think it effects everything up to vista, vista should display the 4gb correctly,

http://www.drobo.com/ you can't go very wrong with this baby :) just chuck in any old drive and it works everything out.

CPU upgrade question ...
the best performance gains can usually be found from installing a faster harddrive and reinstalling windows :D

vista...........
We've bought about 6 macbooks for the office, including one pro, everyone has had a failure of some sort and the build quality isn't very good, all are cracked in the same place and all of them have a problem with clicking, shame as its a good OS, the actual Mac towers are probably better as they don't get carried around as much My favorite laptop in terms of build quality is defo a Vaio,

vista...........
disable UAC then if you don't like the computer says no effect, the UAC once disabled returns vista to an XP machine in terms of security, see my above link on disabling that the UAC is designed to annoy users so software vendors start making secure applications that don't pop up alerts all the time,

P4 Processor Upgrade
sure they are, the original design is 8 years old now, and theres been no noteworthy releases for nearly 3 years, plus they are quite hot and use a lot of power. dual core designs are not only good for multi threaded applications the actual redesign of the chip allows for more efficient processing so lower clock speeds can do more work on one cycle. its not just about GHZ these days, I have one 2.8ghz 8 core system and one of those cores blows away a 3.4ghz p4. Also the most major thing to consider when upgrading is your IO bottleneck, a harddrive is generally good for 3 years, after that I replace them as a matter of course, IDE/PATA drives especially start to degrade in performance after that time I find, if possible get a good SATA 2 drive and maybe more if you can afford and run in a raid 0/10 setup :)

P4 Processor Upgrade
as above, you'll see a much better performance hike by getting a new system, p4's are old, use a lot of power and weren't really that good a chip, the new core 2 duo chips are actually based on the p3 architecture but if you can give us your mobo make we should be able to tell you the fastest chip it can handle

i think the law of the land is actually one account and a second account is a banable offence, but testing is seperate to causing a nuisance
