if your gonna mig it then i would say get yourself some scrap steel, start with flat pieces and practice a few joints, but welds, seam welds and 90 degree angle pieces thats how i started when i learnt at college then progress up to tube, its pretty simple once you have got the grasp of things. if you make sure you get good penetration on the steel it should be pretty darn strong, i seem to remember that an inch of propely laid weld will hold 1.5 metric tonnes or summin silly like that. dont forget if your gonan go down teh mig route there will be splatter from the welding process so watch the upholstery man!not to mention its very hot! did anyone say fire?if you dont feel comfortabl eor competant theres loadsa guys out there that wanna make a few extra quid esp atm and will happily weld what you want toghter for not big bucks, if you really wanna learn local tech colleges run corses to learn to weld, you wont regret this as if your really into cars being able to weld really will make your life a dash easier
