  1. Aha, seems likely Jaikai, since I got it directly from Tokyo with only 20,000 km on the clock and nothing changed from original
  2. At long last I have The Beast back on the road. Wonderful to drive it again having suffered a Citroen C5 estate for the last six months. It's had all its belts changed and a new water pump and feels and sounds luvverly :) Also, I've found a wonderful and very reasonable mobile mechanic who did all this work for me. He's in Northwood, Middlesex. I'd had trouble until now finding someone good to work on it, so a wonderful find. If anyone in the area needs details, give me a shout.
  3. Hi guys At long last we got to the bottom of the "Mystery Hose". It turns out it was something that had been added at some point by a previous owner to suck fresh air into the carbon canister. Nothing more sinister than that. Anyway, it's been cut down now to a sensible length and all is working well. Just thought I'd update you and thank you as always for your help and advice :)
  4. Hi guys - been offline for a while. Still don't have this problem sorted. Do other people concur with MarkDerby that this is a Chassis Vent for the carbon canister and I should remove it? I'd really like a second opinion since I don't know what I'm looking at. Or can anyone recommend a mechanic in north-west London area I might be able to email on this? Thanks as always for your help :)
  5. Thanks as always for your fantastic help guys, but as far as I know, nothing has been done to the car from new as I bought it with only 26,000km on the clock and one owner in Tokyo 15 years ago. Wouldn't have thought it had been messed with before then. Is there a link somewhere to a carbon canister delete so I can check that out? And I'm still wondering why a passenger wheel bearing change and gearbox oil change might have resulted in this bloody hose sticking out of the engine in the first place? It was never there before (or at least not in the same place)
  6. Hi guys - we still haven't got to the bottom of this but have been having another look today and could use some help again .. pics below We've chased the "mystery hose". The diameter of the hose, outside to outside is 14/16" Just to recap, this is hose sticking out after it came back from garage for gearbox oil change From the picture arrow (below), it goes into the engine bay and hose is about 1 metre long and not connected to anything Cable tied to AIV pipe (passenger side) as shown below Cable tied throughout inner wing from back to front as below Comes out below coolant reservoir as below Comes out behind coolant reservoir and is jubilee clipped to a thinner steel pipe exiting the engine bay inner wing. Does anyone know what this thinner steel pipe is and where it goes? Any ideas please? What the hell has this useless garage done to my car? It's been off the road for over a month now. Grrrr. My partner wonders if this is going round the inner wing to keep it away from the heat of the engine - maybe something to do with the intercooler or air intake?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have :)
  7. It's a flexible rubber hose. I'm wondering too now if it's something the garage has left behind. For obvious reasons I'm not too keen to take it back to them unless I really have to
  8. Hiya guys. Thanks for the suggestions, but it's not that one Groover. It's much longer - about 4' long. We'll try to get to the other end of it and show you that
  9. It may well not have been under the battery tray at all - that's just where the mechanic has put it up out of the way. The other end is connected high up under the passenger side wing.
  10. That wasn't the answer I wanted to hear Z32bolt  It's about 3' long. Anyone any ideas or have my photos put you off?
  11. Yes, have tried blowing down it. There's no pressure at all, whether the engine is running or not. It's completely clean inside, never had oil or water in it. Also pretty clean on the outside so must've been well tucked away somewhere
  12. Hi again guys Thanks Groover, but after looking at your helpful pics, we don't think this is the pipe in question now. It's much longer than that - nearer 4' long. I've taken some pics (see below), but be aware that the garage have tucked a load of this pipe up under the car. Hope they might help :) To recap, save reading all the post, this was found disconnected after auto gearbox oil change. Tape round one end, no sign of any jubilee clips or it being fixed anywhere
  13. Hi Groover - car is exactly as it was built, I've never had anything done to it. The hose it looks like is the big (non ridged) black rubber one in your Passenger Side AIV photo above
  14. Think it's the passenger side AIV as shown in Groover's first photo. Where does the other end of this hose go? Is it connected to anything or is it left open to air? And where should it be routed under normal operation? Thanks a lot :)
  15. Many thanks as always for your help guys - you're brilliant :) Have emailed all the info over to the garage and will be taking the car round there shortly. I'll let you know what they say and if they can't find what it is I'll get them to take some pics. Wes, it's just my local garage I took it to, but the mechanic there has owned two Zs. Couldn't drive it any further with the wheel bearing gone. Since you are relatively local, could you recommend anyone for future work?
  16. I should've taken pics while it was up on the ramp this morning. Didn't have a camera with me as I mistakenly thought the mechanic would know what it was  I know very little about mechanics but I've looked up AIV delete and know that nothing has ever been changed from its original set up as it was an (almost) new Jap import when I got it 15 years ago and have done nothing to it at all. If these bits and pieces live under the wheel arch liners, might they have been disturbed when the mechanic changed the wheel bearing? Would they have to take the wheel arch liners off to replace the wheel bearing? Sorry to be dumb, all new to me  I know for sure this hose wasn't disconnected when it went into garage, so it's definitely something they've done
  17. Hi guys. Bit of a mystery here. Fairlady Z TT 1991 J reg. I've just had my passenger side front wheel bearing replaced and then gearbox oil and coolant changed. Was checking the gearbox oil level when I got it back from the garage and noticed a disconnected black rubber hose, prob just under an inch in diameter, sitting on top of the engine in front of the battery. It has the remains of some black tape around the end, but is clean. No marks on it, no jubilee clip or any other sign of it being attached to anything. Now I don't know what all the bits of my engine are for, but I have spent long enough looking at it over the last 15 years to know that it has never had a disconnected hose sitting on top!! Took it back round the garage and they've just spent an hour scratching their heads as to what it can be. Got it up on the ramps and the hose is fixed at the other end to something underneath the passenger side front wing. Mechanic says it's not oil, it's not water because the hose is clean. It has no pressure when blown into, either when the engine is running, or when it's not. It's about 3' long. There isn't a similar one on the other side. Was told it's not affecting the running of the engine, but I'm not happy to drive the car until I know what it is. Neither of the mechanics have any idea what it is for or where it has come from :glare:. They've told me to take it back tomorrow so they can strip off the front wheel splash guard and find out what it's attached to. Bit of a long shot, but any ideas please?
  18. Hi there - can anyone point me in the direction of info on how to change passenger side front wheel bearing please? I've had a good look around but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help as always :)
  19. Hi guys. Had my Z for around 15 years now so been in here a few times for your help :winkiss: Regret to admit I still know very little about how the thing actually works :confused1: When the weather gets colder, my HICAS warning light comes on for a few seconds when the engine is cold and then goes off again. It sometimes does this a couple of times before it warms up properly. Does/could this indicate a problem? Thanks :winkiss:
  20. Yay! Thanks guys, the Beast lives :) It was indeed a stuck starter motor causing the problem. After having a chat with Silverbullet my partner whacked the starter a few times and bingo! Many thanks to all of you and especially to Silverbullet - you guys are tops :)
  21. Thanks for your suggestions guys. I've given Silverbullet a call and he's going to try and get over and have a look for me. Many thanks as always for your help.
  22. We have removed the battery for an hour thereby resetting the ECU and upon reconnection, whatever is spinning up is still spinning up - the noise is coming from very close to the left hand turbo near the engine as you look at it - is this where the air con sub fan is? Even with the engine temperature sender disconnected, the noise is still happening. Is there a method of testing the engine temperature sender without running the car? What's the relation between the turbo timer and the air con sub fan/system? In summary, as soon as you reconnect the battery, this fan is still whirring up. Is there any further tests we can do without starting the car? Is there a way of disabling this fan so that we can just drive the car? Is it safe to start the car or should we not attempt to start it? For the last few times I started the car before this noise began, it delayed slightly on starting but ran fine when started. My partner gets the feeling its connected with some ignition process or a faulty relay somewhere. Any ideas anyone please? Many thanks for your help - much appreciated as always. Do you know of anyone who might be able to come out and help us to fix this?
  23. Hi again - does anyone know of anyone local to me who could come over and fix this for me please? I've not been able to find a mechanic locally to work on it. Thanks in advance.
  24. * Sorry, typo, last line should read "temperature sender". Not allowed to edit my posts
