As a shop steward for a rather large union, I find I get no bother from any management, mind you, being 6'3, built like a brick privvy, that seems to help too!!! Just tell him that your not willing to except any attitude from him, if he think's hes going to get the better of you by mouthing off, it aint gona happen. Then tag a comment on the end about how he must be a twat to think that he's better than you
