The stock boost guage, if working correctly would be right to the right hand side. Yes you should be rather worried about boost spike even with a chip. A friend of mine has boost jets fitted without a aftermarket gauge and the next day his engine blew ... no shit ... I will try and find the link for the boost leak detectors for you ...
