  1. Fixed it, sort of. The alternator was feeding the ignition switch through the alarm system.Had to put a cutoff switch to the coil to stop engine till I get round to sorting it properly. Trouble is the alarm is just a mass of unidentified black wires so don't know how easy it'll be to sort.
  2. It's the Granada Bosch one. Checked ignition switch and it's all ok. I can't work it out yet, it does seem as if the alternator is feeding the ignition, but can't work out why when I switch off the ignition that all the other things powered by the switch turn off. It's just the coil that's getting power to it still. I've read the cure for this in the past and it involves putting a diode somewhere, but can't find anything now.
  3. Another problem with the Chevy is the engine won't stop with the ignition turned off. It even keeps going with the battery earth terminal disconnected. I know it's obviously the alternator keeping it going but can't find out the cure. Anyone any ideas?
  4. Well, just took it for a run. Very disappointing. Massive fuel leak. Only running on 7. Choking on fumes from the exhaust wrap. Exhaust leaking. Air/fuel ratio at 11:1 at cruise! Apart from that it was great!! No, there were some positives, I thought the ride was going to be very crashy and harsh after polybushing the back end, but it seems really solid and supple. The clutch is really light and positive, with the servo and hydraulic release bearing. Didn't get chance to nail it as it was obviously not running right, so have to wait and see. Leaving it till weekend now 'cos I've just about had a bellyfull. Had forgotten how good they look on the road tho', so will keep plodding on.
  5. It's vac 2ndaries.It's really just a stop gap to get the car on the road. After fitting fuel injection to my last Chevy I want to fit it to this too. Unfortunatly I had to sell the injection set up to fund the buying of this Z. With a bit of luck I'll be running FI again by Xmas. This time I want to make most of it myself so I can size the central plenum to fit the bonnet line exactly, and look nice as well. Like a lot of things I know exactly what I want, but no-one sells it, so I end up making it, which in a way is part of the fun. For me anyway.
  6. Not yet. Just got it off the ramps at 10pm. Got tomorrow off work so hopefully will be mobile by dinner time. Got to track the back end and finish turning the ally exhaust trims and that should be it. Just noticed how close the sump is to the floor, maybe I won't be lowering it any more after all.
  7. Yes I'm sure their's will be nice jobs too. One thing I would say tho is that engines don't get much more reliable or tuneable, or as cheap to tune as the good old small block Chevy. The only downside is the cost of going to aftermarket fuel injection. By the way everyone, thanks for the comments.
  8. Joely, is that last sensor 4 little magnets with a tywrap, which you fix to your propshaft? What range of pulses per mile can your speedo work with?

  10. On my 1st transplant some years ago I had the same problem. I did a temp job by making a bracket for the sender and fitting a belt pulley to it. Then I ran it off a small 'o' ring belt off the propshaft. Bit crude but it worked fine for 6 years, and you can alter the calibration by the size of the pulley
  11. There's a wide range of cost, depending on the spec you want. Assuming you could do all the work yourself. I bought most of my bits new (over the years) and a quick tot up comes to about 8 grand just for the basic requirements, forgetting the dash, brakes, suspension, fancy hose fittings, etc. But then again I could have done the job for about half that, using 2nd hand bits like a Cosworth t5 box and re-using some of the original exhaust. Remember, the wiring is a pain, it took about a month just to do that, although that included the dash
  12. Cheers, Being 6'3" I found I couldn't see the top of the dash or get my knees under the wheel and operate the clutch. Not so bad when it was an auto but couldn't have driven it comfortably now.
  13. Few pics just before it comes out of the garage. (Just in case I wrap it up at the first roundabout) Just got to tidy engine bay a bit, align suspension, and fit the boot trim and it's ready for the road. Apart from the front suspension being too high now. It may be too high to drive far so may be back in the garage next weekend. It's about 30mm higher at the front and 12mm higher at the back now, due to losing all the Nissan stuff. I thought it would be about the same as I've put in a fair bit of extra soundproofing, but it seems as if it's going to be 100-150kgs lighter at a guess. Going to run a carb at first, to run engine in, and fit injection and the blower on later in the year. Unless I don't like the car in which case I'll get rid as it is. Should be nice tho, with the soundproofing, rattles eliminated, polybushed, 6.3 Chevy, Tremec 5 speed box, massive propshaft, Wilwood big brakes, digital dash and centre console gauges, steering wheel raised 30mm, nice seats, HID's, 99 spec lights, etc. There's about 120metres of wire gone back in just to get everything working again, and to be honest the electrics have been the biggest pain of the lot.   14. As a relative newbie it can feel quite intimidating at times when your up against members with 1000's of posts. I log on all the time, but it's mainly to read existing posts, to try and learn more about the car, or if I can help anyone with technical stuff, then I will. But before I started my own thread I'd make sure there was zero chance of being shot down in flames first. Need another 800 odd posts before I felt comfortable joining in day to day. Don't know if others feel the same or if it's just me.
  15. Just swapped my blue relay for a green one and everything works fine. The terminals are identical. Got mine from a scrap Micra.

  17. If you followed the same link as me then it should all work fine. Did it a couple of weeks ago. Is it the link which takes 7 pages to explain a simple 2 page job? Did you put the diode the right way round?

  19. No, I'm getting a bit bored with it. Too much farting about with rockets and tarmaccing roads. Too much trying to appeal to the non car enthusiast. About 20 mins good stuff per episode these days.

  24. If you cut coils out of the spring to shorten it then you will automatically be making it stiffer, in proportion to the number of coils removed.
