I was in the middle of rush hour in a city and the car decided it would die, after having about 50 cars give me there horn (which was very nice of them) i rolled the car back into a layby no stopping zone) I left the car to cool down for a good 10 mins and then she started agian (so im thinking PTU) i then drove off this place only to find 5 mins later the car broke down agian, this time i had to get my uncle to tow me back to his house, while we were on the dual carriage way i left it in gear and the key on turn 1, so the car started as we were being towed and when i got to his house it drove up the drive perfectly fine and i even stopped it and started it agian no problem.

Im sure the PTU is overheating, but i just put some petrol in the car (yes super unleaded!) and after that it started playing up, other people said they had bad fuel from the same garage...

So do you think the PTU needs relocating (its series one) or do you think the fuel is completely f'd.

BTW the fuel was from esso.

Bad fuel would cause at the very worst rough running, but more likely detonation. It would'nt cause car to cutout entirely.

If it is PTU (sounds like it is ) then you need a new one, relocating wont fix the problem.

You just cant win on these cars can you... After the car has been behaving itsself so well i just brought her some hid's :@ Now it wants a DAM PTU GRRRRR no christmas prez for the car

£20-£30 2nd hand, but there is always the risk of it happening again (I've gone through 3 or 4 PTU's in past zed's). or you could invest in the later series PTU (£120'ish) and not have to worry about it again.

I know as soon as i get it PTU something else will go on it...

I might have a Series 1 PTU you can have, i had 3 but i'm not sure if i gave them all up with my car to tttam, i'm pretty sure i still have 1 so pm me your address and i'll send it Monday morning if i've still got it.

old fuel will cause this problem but i doubt if you just had it this was the problem. your best bet in a new series 2 ptu

sorry to hear ur having trouble bud, but yes definetly sounds PTU related but bad fuel can cause similar probs

(but as legrath said would prob still run just not very well:rolleyes:)

hope u get it sorted ;)

It's getting back at you for driving it into a lamp-post. lol ;)

I'd go for a Series 2 PTU personally.

ditto.

same problem for me when i first got the Z, series 2 PTU solved it and it hasnt happened again.

spend a little more and save the worry of it re occuring ;)

stupid question but whats a ptu.

The PTU controls the sparks, series 1 are renowneed for failure, and can be obtained cheap enough,

most people advise after probs, 2 upgrade to the series 2 as are less prone to fail

hth:)

buy a used ptu and relocate it.

Then save up for a series two if ya really wanna :D

i put another series 1 PTU in mine when it went and its running fine now, and i have 1 spare in the car too incase it goes again while im out and about, cost me 30 quid for both, bout 50 quid cheaper than the Series 2 version.

I read up on another website that the series 1 ptu's were faulty and there had been a product recall on them at one stage id advise a series 2 ptu to be shore like if you do get the series 1 and it goes again yuoll be jickin yourself 4wastin the money. I have a series 2 in my 300 hasnt givin bother yet neway.

Yep, the U.S got recall for them but Nissan never bothered with Uk and Japan unfortunatly

Relocation will only delay the inevitable.

Yup - what he said........:(

The 300zx was not sold in sufficient quantities in the UK for Nissan to acknowledge the problem.....

Buying a used series one PTU is a false economy; that will fail as well. You're better off buying a new series 2 item. Mine went excatly the same way as yours by the sound of it; just after I bought the car. I ordered a new one from Courtesy Nissan in the USA and it's never hppened again!

Richard:)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Could be the CAS too, did you notice the rev counter going mad at all before it stalled? Mine did exactly what looked like the PTU, would suddenly cut out then start 5 minutes later, thanks to Eric pointing me towards the CAS, cleaned up the connector and problem solved :)

Hi mate I had an S1 and had nothing but probs I replaced it with an S2 or later one and I've not had a problem since

Bad fuel would not cause this problem. It wouldn't run right at all. It definately wouldn't just die and start again.

PTU's (series 1) have a problem when they get hot the solder joints lift casing 1 or more cylinder to cut the spark. I series 2 PTU is much more resiliant and I've never seen or heard of a series 2 PTU having this problem.

Bit of an update, i relocated it today, it is located on the left hand side near the fuse box at the front of the car (just down from the battery.) I drove it home and it was perfectly fine, but im not going to risk it breaking down on me agian, once i get back from my trip to america ill order a S2.

Just a small point. If you are going to America why not buy the PTU there.....see the link below for Courtesy Nissan where I bought mine a few years ago. You wont pay import tax if you put it in your luggage.

Just a thought when I bought mine pound wasnt that strong against the dollar but at the time America was cheapest option for me.#

Thanks for point that out mate, i might do it, it should be delevered in the time im there :D

But if you order it from the states you will be liable for import tax in the uk, thats why it would be better to buy it in usa and bring it over yourself.
