Hey guys

the garage rang and are telling me that they have the car up to 1 bar and 400 horses.

But it starts to misfire when it gets hot so they reckon I need a new set of coils. Are they talking shite? or are they on the right track? They say the coilpacks start breraking down at 1 bar.

Cheers Ron

Shite, but on the right track. Stock coils are well good for 400 and plenty more. Misfires when hot are generally down to the coil pack connectors or fuel injectors connectors, nearly always when hot.

Mine does it from time to time, little wiggle here and there and 2 mins later good as new, until the next time.

New connectors should see yer right bud.

If there old coils then its possible, be worth getting some new ones or upgrade them to splitfire coils.

Hey Smithy

Thanks for the quick response. Ive got a new loom so I'd be surprised if it was the connectors themselves do you think it might just be they need re-seating? Cos I'd be surprised if they have not tried that?

Hey LG

It had a set of standard plugs grade 6 they've put some grade 8 ones in and now they reckon the coils need replacing

yes there very good, the skylines run very similar coils to ours and its a good upgrade for a skyline running bigger boost.

as its been said i would also look at your plugs, which ones do you have?? might be worth going a grade colder? i had 7's in mine but 8's would be more than good enough for your spec i would have thought and they need to be gapped right, 0.9 or if its blowing the spark out then try them a little closer :)

Hey guys

I have decided to get the car back off the garage as I think they are just pulling my chain, If they aren't then I have just lost faith in them as they seem hell bent on upgrading everything in my car. Anyone know someone I can trust in the South to get my car mapped? I'll buy some coils from Z1 they have some tested second hand ones. Unless anyone here reckons I should buy new?

:)this is all useful stuff. just got my 300zx. hope to get mine round the 400bhp.

Don't waste yer cash mate, a tested second hand coil is one that is tested to be working and thats it. If you have no misfire at normal temps and normal running, then yours are just the same as the ones you intend to buy.

Theres no test am aware off for coils at high bhp, if it works normally thats it!

With you having a new loom, then yes that rules out the connectors. Likelyhood of coils breaking down is pretty remote, however they are cheap as chips second hand and loads around to borrow and check.

Fitting splitfires is not a bad idea, but if yer coils were not at fault before, you'll still end up with same problem.

What brand plugs it running and as said, 8 is a wee bit cool tbh, you could actually wap a set of NGK's in it in 30mins for 50 quid and may even be sorted.

It's 400bhp which is a very common output now for these and all run it wihout coil pack or spark plug probs or by upgrading them either.

If you want someone to map your car, speak to JD, he should be able to sort you out

dont think he does aem, i know he does his own chips but thats it.

you will be best looking at the skyline and supra forums to find decent aem mappers as theres more on there :)

if you get stuck pm me i know a few decent ones

Mike

Markstevens had a similar problem to this, Took him a few years to work it out tho.

On full power the engine was flexing and pulling the injector connector loose from one of the injectors so it might be worth checking how much slack your wires have.

JD mapped a previous Z of mine(on the road)went like an animal after 20mins of laptop magic:cool:great fun too.

Cheers for all the responses guys. I've bought some new coils from MJP and they will be going in the car next week. I've fixed a price with the garage for the work and its capped. Jimmy I'll get them to check for slack in the cables in case thats the problem. Its running 408 at 0.9bar at the moment. With the coils they reckon it should get close to 500. Let you know next week, hopefully.

Thanks for all the help guys
