Seems that some people I speak to are unaffected by this and others are only marginally affected!

Hope I not stirring up negative memories but whats your experience?

Its early days. Its going to hit small businesses first, and depends on the industry. Construction, real-estate..etc have been suffering for a while.

I am not sure if the press are building this to a bigger state than it is, there is little wrong with economies. As a friend said this is a banking crisis not an economic crisis, if you can separate the two things!

mark i hear the fire brigade gets burnt no matter what? :D

on a professional level its all down to cash and resources, those with them can ride it out or bottom feed on the fallen....those without out...will crash and burn i'm afraid

i see a lot of people who are asset rich cash poor which is a bad postion right now as asset managment still costs money regardless of any recession...the only assets worth a damn are ones you can liquify quicky....but all such processes have a transaction cost so there will be losses there too....a lot on the TV and radio is concerned about individual cases of which almost all of which i notice have their eggs all in one basket.... bad financial planning basically...i saw a 70 y old guy on panorama with £300k in halifax shares and that was his pension plan...!!!!

It seems to be. My company's continuing to make growth and is anticipating in making growth next year too. Although there has been a slowdown, we're still growing. The company I work for is quite cash-rich anyway with a good strong foot-holding in the market place. So I am quite fortunate.

It's a private company still, not a PLC or Corporation, even though it's a multi-national. Still owned by relatives of the founders. So no shareholders to answer to.

The company I am currently working with just asked if I would accept a 60% pay cut...

I said - thanks for asking, but no.... but I would consider only a 50% pay cut. "oh no, that is still too expensive" they said "we will have to leave it..!"

So now I carry on at my existing rate?? go figure - I put it all down to the recession playing tricks with peoples minds!

As odd as that sounds - it's very true.

That is all a recession is a mass change in societies opinion on the financial situation!

well its good for me, the more people who cant afford homes want cheaper accomodation, that's where i come in with the bedsits

dont spend money you aint got on things you cant afford to impress people you dont like and it will make it easier to come out the other side without knowing the bailifs 1st name;)

The last big recession i had more work (renovation in property in chelsea westminster ) the last few wks ive been trying yo get my self motivated to start up again in london after selling up in 2002 ,there is lots of work in the building secter depends on what you specalise in

Sorry to hear that bud, but surely you are not on the scrap heap, running your own business for 10 years must demonstrate a vast range of qualities to a potential employer!

Sadly the number of potential employers is shrinking too, along with the jobs. What sort of jobs are there now available and will they pay a reasonable living wage.

well im off to Florida to think about it all in a few days time!! :D :nana2::dance::nana2:

Im off to portland, Or in 4 weeks ;)

i closed my florist business 2 months ago after 10 years, while i still really miss it and have a huge sense of loss for something that i grew from nothing to be an extremely sucessful business i am starting to think maybe i got out at the right time afterall flowers are a luxury/non essential buy.

i suppose im lucky as i owned the premises and will have a decent surplus on the rent while still retaining the building, i closed on a sunday and started a job on the monday which is only a 6 month contract, my bank manager congratulated me last week at closing and said there is much worse to come!!

I have been a sub-contract new build window fitter earning pretty good money for the last 7½ years. I'm now pretty much on the verge of bankrupcy and only surviving on the few private renovation jobs that I am getting (despite spending all my spare time and money advertising) but I haven't done a day on new build for 3 months now. The main company I do work for is still going, but they have had to diversify quite a lot to survive, and they are only getting enough work for the few fitters that they have on salaries. I know of at least 4 new build window companies that have gone bust now - it's hit my part of the industry really hard.

If anyone needs anyone, I am currently looking to get an employed job :D Alternatively, I own a Transit Jumbo if anyone needs a sub-contract driver :)

Gotta try!

i have not noticed a slow down myself, i have never been so busy have work planned until march/april 09 and people are still calling for work. But i have friends that have hit hard times and work has slowed down, but even with work very good for me ATM i am still worried it could all end badly

"touch wood" we are really busy, we have just taken the plunge and expanded our business and taken 2 more people on to handle the work load and it doesnt seem to be slowing down!! i suppose i'm lucky that the flooring game will always get work as people will always want new flooring or commercial will always need to repair or change theirs.

on the up side is we are getting massive discounts on stuff, we just contract hired a car and a van for a fraction of the price!!

Mike

the aircraft industry is booming !

we just took an order for 101 lear jets at a cost of 800 million i think, i could be wrong on the price, but def 101 jests, that means work for the next 15 years
