Hey just got me a new 90 TT automatic had it for about a month now with 66km on clock legit (i hope). For the last few weeks sometimes when its cold in drive its been going to about 3-4k revs before changing gear but a few days ago it just gave out on me and wouldnt move, the HiCAS light is permantly on and since it gave out its been smoking like hell any ideas would be a big help

Well, the HICAS light and engine smoke won't be related unless you have a leaking pipe. The two might be seperate issues. Check the PAS level in any case.

 

The smoke could either be PCV valves or turbo seals. What colour is the smoke?

Well the PAS lvl is very low any special type of fluid for that or just a normal one? as for the smoke its thick white but only from the drives side exhaust the other side is thick but nowhere near as bad

Whitey blue smoke would hint at turbo seal failure.

Check your water level at the radiator cap ( when cold ) if it's low you may have a headgasket failure, white smoke can mean water getting in chambers.

When you say no drive do you mean the car won't go at all? If so your auto may have gone, In which case, i'm sorry to say, you may have a scrap car on your hands, unless you are loaded.

Well when i first start it up and try moving it does grip and start moving stopped it straight away but next time i tried 30 seconds later with engine still on it wouldnt move at all i hope its not the auto box thats the last thing i need at the moment

check the gearbox oil level, dipstick in engine bay, pray it's that that is low.

Unfortunatly already checked that its all fine and is a nice redish colour :( im guessing that isnt good news...

no it dont look good. When mine went it started off by not moving when releasing the brake, had to use accelerator to get it to move. Then after ten mins had no drive, let it cool down it would move again but not far. You're looking at £1800 for rebuild or take a chance on a box off a breaker. might get one for about £400 + fitting.

 

Whats the water level like in radiator?

Nope he is very lucky if this is the case, as ive got a mint Auto TT box just waiting to be be taken of my Jap Zed,

When i can get th etime to start breaking it..

Plus he lives less than a minute from me.

i didnt check it on level ground ill do that in a sec im hoping it isnt the gearbox its self just brought some PAS oil and HICAT light gone out so gonna try it again in a sec if it is the gearbox im sure stu will be nice enough to sell his to me :D or poss look at a conversion depending on price thx for all the help so far didnt expect so much so fast oh and ill repay those fags back stu haha

Looks like you have more than one issue but the main one is the lack of drive, this almost is certainly cause by the fluid strainer been blocked inside the gearbox.

 

The nature of what is blocking it will determine what the future holds for your autobox, if it is metal then game over, if it is small bits of fibre then it could be just normal wear and tear on the brake bands etc. usually caused by lack of service, if it is long strips of fibre its fractured parts of the clutches which could be a bigger problem.

 

So the first step is to drain the auto box if it has a drain plug ( not all do) if not prepare to get oily, the sump is secured by a series of 10mm bolts which when all removed the sump will come off and then you can see the stariner and remove it.

 

Thoroughly clean all debris form the stainer and clean any bits from the internals of the gearbox, re-assemble using a new sump gasket and refill with at least 3 litres of fluid run up and then re-check the level again.

 

Clearly there is more than 3 litres of fluid in the gearbox so after 50 to 100 miles you need to do the whole proccess again to completely clean the box and torque convertor out.

Small tip is to apply a little grease to the sump gasket when fitting which will allow it to be removed and re-used the second time around

Thx Jeff for the advice after adding new PAS fliud it now moves fine so dont know wat that was all about... but now when sitting idle its not keeping the revs high enough for itself and the engine is dying off aswell as kicking alot of thick white smoke when it does it (its not doing this all the time though mainly only when resting on a hill) me and stu are going to clean all the wiring connections and refill anything that needs refilling, we think its been laying around for a long amount of time hence only 66km in 18 years
