right i'm thinking of buying a games console, i still own an old Xbox chiped etc but not used it for years. i'm look for something to play racing games on , i us the PC for things like COD4, better with a mouse for shooting.

so it's between the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

i'm not too bothered about Blue ray as i'll get a drive in the pc.

any tips on whats the better for game selection and online playing etc.

IMO I'd stick with the PC. Buy yourself a force feedback steering wheel and your laughing. If you comp is good enough to play COD4 it should play most things. IF not go for the PS3. HTH

I'm like you, played games mainly on the PC. Then I got an Xbox 360 cheap (£120) on ebay that was 6 mths old. Got it on xbox live and I have to admit I love it! Great thing about the 360 is they are quite cheap now and there are loads of games on ebay for it. I've got about 30+ now, most were less than £15 and all of them are in the gamespot.com top 50. :)

i have a fairly decent PC for playing mouse-based games like BF2 etc. and use my PS3 for arcade games like GRID, GTA4, etc.

the pc isn't a bad spec, amd 4200 dual core ,4gb ram and 512 g card, doesn't run vagas 2 that well at high spec though.i use an xbox controller on the pc for driving games, pc just seem to hang a bit on racing games and have to limit the screen to 1024x700 on my 40" LCD

Im getting bored of my 360, and its only 6 months old! Not sure if i want to sell it thou

I have both (xbox360 soon to be sold when I get round to it) I'd have to say PS3 for the more futureproof machine. The 360 is just a games console where you pay for online play, the ps3 (expandable 500gb+ hard drive ect)could be a full blown media center, search 'play tv' also the ps3 can read off usb sticks ect, you can stream from pc on both but PS3 overall has more to look forward to in the future, 360 owners have to settle for Gears of war 2.................and no I don't want a console war, lol just my 2ps worth :D but am open to be corrected If I have been mistaken.

200% PS3.. im lucky enough to own both PS3 and XB360 (****ed).. but here comes the reason i say go PS3 (other than GT5 obviously) i owned my xb360 for i would say 5 months before i got the dreaded "red ring of death".. essentially my xbox overheated its harddrive and has been sat at the bottom of my cuppord ever since ( thats over a year now) i called and called and called the help line each time being fobbed off, i was told at least 3 times they would send a company to come and pick it up from me blah blah bloody blah... i even asked to speak to the main man bill .. to which the woman on the other phone who i had just spent at least 10 mins explaining how p****d off i was and at least another 45 mins on hold/just ringing (this was by now probably the 10 - 20 time i had been on hold for near on an hour) just laughed at me and said that it was not possible... i am on a rant now bottom line inmo stay away from the xbox, some people have had no problems .. me personally.. well as i said its still in my cuppord ...TNT aint that slow

I Got a 360 purely for Forza 2 and gears of war (and 2 in a couple of months). Both great games.

360 reliability is a joke though, so if you buy one, get one with a warranty. Out of my five close mates, all five of them have had the 'ring of death' (including mine), but Microsoft have been excellent at replacing them. I'll admit, they were pretty crap in the early days before they admitted there was a problem, but turn around time is now less than 2 weeks.

the thing is everyone says the PS3 will come good (i heard this a year ago and still waiting) and at this moment in time the 360 has the better games hands down, but its been out nearly 4 years now so by the time the PS3 gets its 5hits together i feel the games systems have moved on and the xbox 3 will be here and sony say the PS3 is here for 10 years i dont see it. they forgot about us gamers when making the PS3 they were too busy trying to finish HD-DVD off and now find them selfs last in the sales

If you get an xbox 360 with a HDMI socket at the back it will be the new type xbox and will not suffer the overheating problems the older models did. Microsoft brought them out approx 12 mths ago so if you buy second hand check the date on the back and whether it has HDMI. I wouldnt bother going for the elite either, they are identical to the premium now except they have 120Gb HDD and thats it!! You can always upgrade the HDD later if you feel you need the storage.

I have bought 4 second hand 360's for friends and family from ebay with the HDMI port and all 4 are still going strong :)

Yup, mine went back for repair/replacement in April, so mine now has a new serial number and the hardware is dated 04/2008. I'm just hoping the replaced ones are more reliable, but i fear i may have the same trouble a year down the line.

Sorry but I don't rate them at all, everybody I know who has one (apart from Pete :p) has all boken down, amongst a fair few,my mate in work is on his 5th, my brother is now on his 3rd as of last week.

The lad I work with his 360 broke, I fixed the 3 red lights for him, fine then about a month later 3 red lights again, so I looked at it again and re-did (did'nt want to strip the threads on the heatsink the first time around its only ally). Anyway alls fine then about 3 weeks after its on 1 red light now, my advise.........throw it in the bin and get a PS3.

Also If your intending to get one to get 'flashed' you can't as of yet flash the new drives as they have a read only firmware on them, you can swap drives about but thats a different route, microsoft can tell, then you get banned from xbox live and the console can't connect anymore............360=vicious circle.....

if got an xbox 360 elite, and i love the HD gaming on it, look me up, username 'CheapPete' i love the games but forza is terrible out of date now.

And with the elite you dont get the old red ring problem so no sendng back to get repaired :)

my brother had the red ring problem and fixed it buy wrapping it up in a towel for an hour wilst switched on. apparently the heat resolders or bend something back into shape. no particularly sure but it defo works

Thats what I mean. The newer 360's are the same as the elite with the HD capabilities :) elites just have a larger HDD. BTW dont touch the Arcade version!

Not sure i would like to try your RROD solution tho without checking my home fire insurance first
