just pulled into work, steam coming from Drivers Side of engine bay

the temperature gauge was normal though?

last month the water pump went, temp gauge was right up, and steam galore.

whats this now then? how come the temp gauge was fine?

Hope this is something cheap and easy :(

im dreading driving home :(

stock temp gauge? They're notorious for sitting bang in the middle until it's WAY overheated...

You'd be better getting it recovered home unless you can find and fix the leak... AA/ RAC? Just not worth risking damage..

yea stock gauge,

whats wrong now :(

simple air lock? but how would have developed?

got a new water pump, a month ago, so cant be that (asume)

have to check for leaks/pipes.

Gutted man :(

Yep, sounds like you have a water leak and the water has got to low for the gauge to read.

You need to find and repair the leak before driving it again.

Hopefully no engine damage will have been done, but unfortunately they are very suseptical to Head gasket failure once overheated. :(

Hmm.

literally overheated as i was parking up.

have not driven it whilst steamy.

checked the oil cap straight away, was all nice and clean.

fingers crossd ive got a massive hole in one of the water pipes!

paranoid as hell tho now :(

pour water into the rad and see if it leaks out straight away. if its dripping from just behind the rad then it could be your front water pipes/rubbers that go into the front of the engine under the plenum have perished. you'll see the water down the front of the cam end covers and behind your bottom pulley if so. hope you get it sorted mate

just filled up with LOADS of water.

Radiator took quite a bit, so asume not much in there.

noticed the oil dipstick pushed out, and spurted oil around the barttery again.

need to tape it in. (there is no pessure in there tho when you take the oil cap off to check)

If the head gasket has gone, how will it use loads of water?

or is it a leak?

got a mechanic on the sceene next week, wont be driving until then

don't tape it in! it shouldn't be under that much pressure... you need to find out what the cause is!!

was told to do that, to avoid leaking the oil.

any pressure just goes back through the sysytem?

thats a seperate issue tho think.

anyway,

filled it up with water. and i mean filled it up! radiator must have been empty? as tool loads and loads of water. also put a few litres in the other part (passanger side water container)

drove home fine, temp stayed lovely and normal.

heaters worked fine.

theres obv a leak somewhere tho? but doesnt appear to be blatent.

mechanic going to inspect it next week.

going to leave it parked up until sorted.any coments, views opinions welcome!

If your dipstick is coming out and spraying the battery with oil its time to do a compression test. You may have piston/ring land failure.

check all the little hoses and perhaps get your mechanic to pressurise the cooling system to see if he can find any leaks ! but on the other hand if your dipstick is popping out you have bigger probs

heres a thaught.

i had the water pump changed a month ago, as was overheating.

no leaks found. when pump was off, there was no gasket on there.

heaters didnt work.

car was fine then.

now overheated again.

this time heaters work.

ive filled up with water, and its fine.

1) was the water pump changed for no reason?

was it just the fact the mechanic filled it full of water after changing the pump that cured the over heating?

its lasted a month before overheating again. if this was the case would it have overheated sooner?

2) the water pump was gone. and this is a new leak/problem. as the heaters work this time, and the gauge workt.

just to finish this thread off,

there is a leak, can see water dropping out underneath.

havent got round to looking for the hole yet tho :smash:

keep topping it up with water every week.

the 300 is a Camel tho isnt it? when it was empty, it took a stupid amount of water???

anyone know how many litres it can hold?

It defo sounds like you have an issue with one of the many small rubber pipes that run around the back of the engine and under the plenum.

The particular pipes your now having problems with were most likely ready to go anyhow, changing the water pump and also adding anti freeze ( which has searching properties) can often tip other pipes over the edge.

Yor best bet is to have all of the unnecessary pipes removed/ re-routed using new ones.

As others said the temp gauge sensor sits very high in the system so any water loss leaves it unable to give an acurate reading, the water fed to the heater matrix also sit high so any water loss means the flow is lost to that too.

Hope that helps.

you should only have around a pints worth in the header tank, if you turn the wheel right hand down you should see the fill lines. so ive been told, its not good to over fill this bottle.

as for the dip stick blowing out, the crank case is under excess preasure. this should be checked asap. possibly causing the engine to run hot and over heat
