looks horrid. starts off all nice and curvey like the Z33 then has horrid straight lines like the z31. what going n with that thing :smash:

I think it should have a high revving v8 like the new ///M3 because they sound the absoloute b******s. But to make the Z a succesfull car for Nissan it should have the option of a diesel engine, preferably a six pot though...just my opinion

Diesel is great for pulling loads around and cruising, accelerating from 60 to 80... But lets be honest who gives a shit about that.

Diesels are actually rubbish, they burn inefficiently, pollute more than they really should and are vastly complicated these days and cost so much to run.

They dont even sound good, they dont rev properly (cannot stand that woolly increase in revs you get near the "red line" i.e when it cant overcome its own compression!)

They're not even that economical when worked hard, a proper petrol engine, with direct common rail injection can all but match the economy of a diesel (bear in mind the diesels weight penalty as well since its hune from granit or similar AND its hugely more expensive fuel!) and yet sounds good, and revs properly and is kinder on the environment!

So for the sake of everything nissan, DONT put a bloody diesel in there!

So you hate diesels then mate;)

I must admit I'm not keen on them either........

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

and a 3.7l engine and its been on a diet!

I think its going to be a good one personally. Somthing like 350bhp, 6 pot fronts and 4 pot rears and 100kg less than 350z is going to see it at around 1400-1450 kg which makes it 240BHP/ton ish! which is about 4.5 seconds to 60. Beast!

Well as ever if you get a good diesel its always "good for a diesel" which means its not as good as the petrol... So why bother... Unless your tight, i had (well still have a diesel xsara) i bought it because i was tight and didnt want to run a petrol car down there...

For motorway work there is some argument for diesel, it does at least function okay on there, but get it in a lane and this mysterious awesome torque that a diesels generate seems to disapear! My xsara develops 200nm or torque (ive no idea when but apparently it does somewhere!), the old laguna i had before that generated about 160 i think yet it was awesome in lanes and quicker on the motorway.

The worst thing about diesels though that riles me more than anything is the way they rev up to their top end, that agonising few seconds when you think its not actually accelerating but the revs are still climbing, if ia change too early it'll be off boost if i change later it dies for seemingly hours in the upper aeons of its rev counter (i.e like 4k, an s2000 ticks over at that! LOL).

I used to drive a vivaro van, hell it was quick if you drove it right, but it only generated any power from 1800rpm to around 3k, so youd got realistically 1000 revs to play with, so all the time up and down through 6 gears and still then it was either just too much or just too little... Could never get it right in the 15k i drove it for! or not for enough of the time anyway!

Dont worry funkySi - a picture of the new NSX for you in your trade mark white!!

Blurgh...that's ugly too. What happened to the sleak, low, sexy and exotic lines of the original? Looks more like a Laguna now!

Gimmie these ANY day!...and yes, I prefer the pre-facelift ones by a light year!

No, i agree totally about diesels, but am saying if Nissan gave people the otion of having a diesel powered Z I am convinced it would boost the success of the Z car no end...

I havent read this thread, just looked at pic and they are getting worse not better...long live the Z32 end of.... ;)

people who do a lot of motorway mileage

they burn more efficiently than petrols, emit less co2 (good for tax if nothing else), and with DPF particulate emissions are hardly anything any more

They dont even sound good, they dont rev properly (cannot stand that woolly increase in revs you get near the "red line" i.e when it cant overcome its own compression!)

agreed

no way a petrol will match a diesel for economy, ever, especially when giving it beans. Fuel economy goes out the window when pressing on in a petrol, diesel can still maintain good mpg even when really spanked.

So for the sake of everything nissan, DONT put a bloody diesel in there!

Don't get me wrong, I hate diesels as much as the next petrolhead, but your 'facts' are just wrong.

I drive diesels all the time for work and I do an average of 80.000 miles a year and they are not as good as everyone thinks. They are more robust and can take a lot more punishment but that may just be due to the fact that they rev lower than your average petrol engine? But as an example 2 years ago I owned a Vectra 1.8 estate Auto and for work drove a 1.7 TDi astravan manual. Both cars were more or less the same fuel economy driven the same pounds per mile, at that time it cost me about £35 in either to drive from bedford to Liverpool and back. Power wise they both were close on the same acceleration and top speed.

This is getting a bit off topic, so for that i apologise, but on the whole diesel/petrol efficiency thing;

The new citroen C1 1.4ltr diesel does:

MPG 67

Insurance Group 1

CO2 Emissions 109 g/km

Road Tax Band B

0-60 mph 15.1 s

Power Output 55 bhp

Torque 130 Nm 96 lb-ft

And the 1ltr petrol does:

MPG 61

Insurance Group 1

CO2 Emissions 108 g/km

Road Tax Band B

0-60 mph 13.3 s

Power Output 68 bhp

Torque 94 Nm 69 lb-ft

So the diesel is really only better on torque and mpg, and given the extra cost of diesel these days i don't see the point in buying one for the extra 6mpg. The figures even show that the diesel puts out more CO2 than the petrol (although only just).

I know this is only one example in the small car end of the scale, but it shows that diesel still has a way to go to make me want to buy one.

Back on topic: the z34 kinda looks like a cross between a z33 and a new 911. It might be a "grower" lol.

Fact is though that diesels are becoming more popular, and my idea was that maybe a diesel dhould be put into the new Z purely to make it even more of a success for Nissan, a bit like BMW did with the Mini and Audi did with the TT...

I think diesel sports cars are a bit of a false economy. As has been metioned, other than sounding crap, having poor throttle response and limited rev-range, the more you get up towards the high performance diesels, the less efficient they are and the more expensive they are to buy.

The people that buy sports cars tend to have the money to afford the fuel and want a petrol car. A petrol car is a drivers' car, the diesel engine isn't regardless of how much power it produces. It just isn't responsive or refined enough.

I'd never buy a performance diesel. My housemate used to have one of the current BMW 535 Twin Turbo diesels. Cracking car with a crazy amount of torque. Fuel consumption was pretty poor to be honest.

I'd sooner have a diesel DD that was pracitcal rather than a a diesel car that was impracitcal. The 350Z is not a practical car and never will be. Throwing a diesel engine in it makes it sound amusing. Diesel sports car still have a limited appeal and will never sell in great numbers. As the cost of diesel goes up over petrol and the reduced economy offered by high performance diesels, to offer any real cost savings, you'd be having to do series mileage. The vast majority of high mileage vehicles are fleet cars. Fleet cars always have and always will be 4/5 door saloon/hatchback cars.

Wise words, Si.......(as usual)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

You have got to remember we are all hard core petrol heads thats why we come on this forum, run these old expensive cars, tax and insure them. But for people that are only fasion conscious i think a diesel z would appeal to them

You have only got to look how many e46 BMW 320d convertibles and diesel a4 convertibles are about. Who in their right mind would buy a drivers car with a diesel engine...?

But the fact remains, there is a high percentage of people that do. And just because we say they are dirty, sound crap and are totally uncool British people still love them. And I would say a very high percentage of diesel Z`s would sell compared to a petrol counterpart, even though I would never consider a diesel Z! I think Nissan would improve the success of the Z car greatly!
