Just put new discs on the rear of my zed, preperation for mot as the cars been of the road now for a while, anyway doing the discs themselves was straight forward enough, i have to install new pads aswell, never tried this before, read a few guides on the proceedure, is it really necessary to replace all the shims etc.... can i not just slide the new pads in??? and also noticed that the inboard pads have less wear on them than the wheel side, are the pistons seized???? Oh and another thing anyone got BMC cap floating around??

cheers all.

One side always wears quicker than the other. I think the outters wear quicker. You just pop out the retrainers, unscrew the bleed nipple, push the calipers back, grease up the pad backings, slide them in, refit the retainers, screw up the nipple and you're done.

When you pull out the old pads chances are that the shims come out with the pads. Separate them from the back of the pads, clean them thoroughly and use some copper grease before putting them on the back of the new pads. Slide pads into position and replace retainers - job done! I have reused my shims every time I changed the pads (and I've had the car over 6 years now). Sorry, haven't got a BMC cap for you ...

thanks chaps, didnt think it would be necessary to change the shims and all, the ones i have are ebc greens, they have a shim with them, but its like an adhesive pad??? anyways so you dont think the pistons are knackered then, had a word with one of my friends, he says sometimes the sliders can become "sticky" rust, dirt etc...

There isnt any sliders on these calipers there twin piston type, stick on shims /anti squel /are fine to replace the metal ones .

You could always press the brake pedal to see if pistons move, but not to far or you'll have the pistons on the floor and brake fluid everywhere !!

so the best thing to do is to have the caliper off again, and check for even movement of the pistons, if its the case their sticking, then i suppose i'll have to remove them for cleaning??? I dont have access to compressed air at home so can i just pump them out on the brake pedal??? And will i need some sort of clamp to get them back in???

no, just use some sort of lever, like a bent screwdriver to push it back, get some brake cleaner spray to loosen it too, i had 1 sezed on the front and got it going again this way.
