... a "How To" guide for changing over Down pipes and Decats???

If not, im going to changing mine over in the couple of weeks or so, and i can create a "how to" guide if anyone thinks its a good idea.

Tried searching here and TT.net and i havent managed to find anything, and it might be usefull to some people who would like to get a bit more hands on with their zed.

When you say down pipes do you mean manifold to turbo?

from turbo down, A Mongoose decat system is a straight swap replacement. With an additional cat-back exhaust it's easy to DIY....6 bolts (3 per turbo) on the front, and 4 bolts (two each) mid section, and some gaskets......DIY job if you can get the car on a ramp..I took mine to a garage with a lift and gave them £25 to swap my mid sections last week....

No mate, im talking about divorced down pipes, ie from the turbo to the begining of the decat pipes.

going to be doing this myslef.

do the downpipe go after the turbo elbow?

do the downpipes replace the turbo elbow? (beleive so)

if they replace the turbo elbow, id imagine the bolts being quote difficult to undo, as they are on th very hot turbo.

lots of heat required to undo i beleive? carefull not to snap em!

GOOD IDEA:dance::D some of us need all the help we can get and these type's of thing are a GREAT HELP unfortunately i wasnt born knowing eveything!:slap:;)

The turbo elbows are held on by 2x 13mm nuts and 2x 13mm bolts and are a pain in the ass. The downpipes bolt to these by 3x 14mm nuts either side and are best to remove hot i.e run your engine for 10 mins first. Use a long extension with a deep 6 sided socket NOT 12 sided and then normally 2x17mm nuts just behind the cats and 2x17mm bolts that are also best taken off hot !

you will have to remove the propshaft protection plate from underneath which is 4x12mm bolts and come out easy. then refit your new stuff and thats it !

I know.....next week, you can replace mine while I take pictures for everyone else to see !

Because Im stuck getting my elbows off the turbo

  • 8 months later...

I am also stock getting my elbows off guys - the bottom 2 on each side came off sweet - they were onloy finger tight I would say!!!!!!!!

But I have only managed the one top BOLT nearest the battery so far - for the other 3 I need to buy a longer 13mm socket 50 or 60 mm maybe - I think that will help. It's a bitch. Let us know your experience and what tools you used - that would really help!

Thanks in advance.

oh cool they are a right git i have a few crescent spanners for when i do it but if you remove battery on n/s you can get it from there but the o/s is a swine. just be patient and you will get there !

The situation is not helped by those silly heat shields - especially when the 10mm bolts are already rounded Grrrrrrrrr

When I get the bolts out I am assuming I hit it with a big rubber hammer and they will fall off (Then I woke up) prising them of sounds fun though - and there is still some skin left on the back of by hands and knuckles so...
