Did they or did they not have the Variable valve timing ?

Did the power drop to 280 for the manual in the final years?

Any help would be appreciated, would rather have the extra 20bhp.

Watch this space ;) the SWB is up for sale soon at a reasonable sum.

I know! :headvswal I know! :headvswal :(

I have got some '99 spec interior bits though, window switches and '300zx' embroidered seats.

Yes ive got the carbon fibre optional 99spec switches and im looking at the 99spec center surround for the stereo next;)

Good thing about the 96 model is that it has a different dash to the earlier models with a different odometer design. The earlier model odometer is almost comically easy to "correct" by hand whereas the 96 model has more protection from that sort of thing. All the connections on the back of the dash look the same but in fact are totally different so you can't just put an older dash on the 96 car with an adjusted mileage so I would say the mileage on the 96 car is more likely to be genuine.

Dave

Yeh, tell me about it! :headvswal

This started on the Series-4 models (10/94 on) and my '95 has this dash.

Been through all the hoops too.

Its got an older series spoiler on it by the look of it.

Would you ever condsider returning it to standard before selling ?

Why would you sell that anyway?! looks pretty nice.

its a 98 car but pre 98-2001 spec, hence the old spoiler.

should have the 94-98 spoiler on then ;) I suspect it had the "no spoiler" option and somebody has since added it.

I suspect you're right. I have a vid of it in 2000 when it just got imported and it has that same spoiler on it. So in the less than 2 years it was in japan somebody fitted it.

As for why I'm selling it, well I bought it because I knew I would never have the oppertunity to own such a new Z ever again. But I really need 4 seats so it has to go i'm afraid.

If it was a 2+2 there is not a cat's chance in hell I would ever sell it. It drives like BRAND NEW. No squeaks, no rattles, nothing. It has a standard exhaust so you can hear any noise (or lack of..)

Mechanically it is perfect, but for it to be 110% perfect it ideally needs painting. I'm not sure whether to paint it or let it go for less and the new owner sort that out........

Let it go for less and let me sort it out!

Not sure about the Ecu stuff and boost controllers etc etc.

I'd prefer the engine to be standard. Dunno if you'd want to take stuff off that would be useful to you ?

I know if I sold my coupe, I'd certainly return it to standard and sell the bits separately, if only to get a better return.

LOL Just turn the boost down to 9psi to go to standard ;) It's only at 12psi now so it's nowhere near the limit. Oh and I keep it in the garage, I've done maybe 200 miles since April so it's not like I rag it everywhere anyway.

The Boost controller is hard-wired in so I will be leaving that in, the Racelogic Traction Control likewize, and the JWT ECU is 16 bit, so it's useless to 99.9% of the members on here as they have '95 or older cars.

I checked last night.

My '98 series 5 DOES have variable valve timing!

Can I just shed a little knowledge I think I know on this little debate.

I may well be wrong but i'll throw it out there for ya.

As far as I recall, it was illegal for the Japs to make a car over 280bhp at the time they made them, so even tho they were pushing 300, they 'pretended' they were only 280 so they could still sell them.

Thats what I thought the real answer was, anyway...

well thats interesting to know!

Wonder if my series 4 has it?

Sounds like it has a different engine in it or is was registered incorrectly.

It wasn't really a law, more of a "Gentlemans agreement"....but yes nearly all the manufactures ignored it anyway.

Some could say the UK model has more power than the Jap becuase the Jap has an exhaust restrictor and the Uk does'nt.....but you could also say the Jap model has more power than the UK model becuase the UK model has 3 cats instead of 2 and the Jap model is mapped for higher octane fuel.

You could even say that the U.S model could have less power then the jap/Uk models becuase they have lower octane fuel and stricter emissions (especially california).

In regards to engine and Turbo, all regions are the same. The auto is less powerfull than the Manual (cam and turbo differences). U.S quote 280 for the Auto. Nissan UK quote 263 for the Auto.

There are apparant cam differences in the later models when they dropped VVT to compensate for any power/torque loss.

300 or 280, I expect they are the same in all regions anyway.

Just flicked thru this whole topic..dunno if anyones answered this yet..

the dash can read in MPH but the odometer can still be in KM/H.

If the person importing it was lazy and didn't change the clocks and just changed the facias, then it still reads in KM, but the MPH numbers are on the outside instead.

If they just stuck a MPH face over the KPH clocks then it will read up to 110mph and the odometer will still be in KPH.

If they coverted it to MPH (it will ready up to 180mph) and the odometer will count in MPH from when it was converted.

It doesn't really affect me I was just voicing I had heard :) - I had read the thing about the 'gentlemans agreement' but I also read something about a law , somewhere, can't find it now though.

T

No, on KPH cars, it's just KPH, people just stick an MPH sticker over the KPH lettering in the middle and then convert the clocks to read MPH.

but if they only stuck MPH DIALS over the KM dials, the the odometer will still read in KM l)

I don't think so. Unless the engine was changed in 1999 with less than 1,000km on it.

It has the later style injectors too and from what I can see, the engine is 100% geniune, never been out ever.

So, I would say the 'myth' about later models loosing VVT is not quite true ;)

What did you look for to check for VVT, the sensors on the back of the cams ?
