Now maybe I'm a bit out of touch with what people get paid these days, but these geezers who are 'just' lorry drivers, are getting £36K a year and have rejected £41K. Now sure it's a responsible job and there is a safety element involved etc but it seems like a heap of cash compared with what a lot of other people, who arguably have more 'important' jobs, are paid. Ultimately, all jobs are important to society, whether that be bin men, Doctors, Police, Nurses (and even IT Consultants lol), but I know a lot of people who are earning around half what these guys get.

Anyone else thought about that ?

It's called capitalism. You get the money that the market can sustain. You don't get paid what you or I or whoever ,deems the importance of your job.If your boss can make more money from you than he pays you it works, if he doesn't it won't work, end of.

Hence for example, footballers earn 100 000k a week because their bosses earn 101 000k a week from their labour, tanker drivers earn 30k a year because their bosses earn 31k a year from their labour. If the tanker drivers want more, good luck to them, get as much as they can, if the market can sustain it they'll get it, if it can't, they won't.

Personally I'm an old commie and think the whole things shit.

Nobody has moaned about roadworkers. Never see them doing any work, just chatting while the token one may be brushing up the dust with a toothbrush and they get paid too much for doing nothing.

Good luck to the tanker drivers.

If I could strike over pay I would.

I'm going to bid for the contract...anyone done their HGv class 1 and got firefighting skills if they crash?!!

I think its unfair to say they are not worth it because they are just a lorry driver, these drivers are PERSONALLY responsible for the loads they carry, they have to check and double check everything on their vehicle and procedures.

If a fruit picker messes his job up some fruit is lost and he gets a *****cking.

If a tanker driver messes his job up, something catastophic happens, if one of these trucks goes up in flames, it will knock the neighbouring houses down, if they lose their load and it gets into the water table thousands of homes become uninhabitable. And if this should happen through their negligence they will end up in the dock or jail for it if they are lucky enough to survive.

The oil companies have to spend hundreds of thousands training these guys and keeping them up to date on all the new regs so im willing to bet that they will give in and give them close to what they ask for after all they carry more than a years load in one truck, and most of them do 6 to 10 drops a day.

They dont have an easy job by any stretch of the imagination, but their premium wage is down to the risk factor and their accountability.

If you think they are overpayed look at how much train drivers get and they dont even have to steer!!! But they still have a massive responsibility in their hands.

I could come up with a Political answer and a reasoned argument that would agree with many on this thread but in all honesty

FOOK EM THE GREEDY *******S

sums up perfectly where I stand

yes they are being greedy *******s but if you dont fight for what you want, you do not bloody get it!!

The problem is with this country, we sometimes need to take a step back and realise what we have, there are children dying everyday because they do not even have a clean water supply. We all whinge, me included but it would be an eye opener to go to deprived countries and see what real suffering is about!

Its fair dos that these drivers think they are "worth" more but more fool them if they think everyone is obliged to agree with them.

Lots of people have lots of responsibility in many different ways. Some people are rewarded well, some are in not such a strong position to demand better pay/conditions. Anyway, I still think they will inundated with job applications when all this is over.

Think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuel drivers get the rage of the puiblic for rising cost of fuel

I might be a long way off, but is this not the theory that we have advanced machines that much, that eventually they will become able to advance themselves and take over the world?

indeed... though the collide project in switzerland could also bring things to an end even quicker?

the idea is to collide 2 atoms into each other both travelling at the speed of light using particle accelerators... scientists dont actually know what will happen... but they thought they'd give it a try! possible outcomes have been predicted that it could crack the earth or create a black hole!

At least if it goes wrong they cant get any stick for it coz we'll all be gonnas!

Deal struck in petrol tanker row

Drivers have begun to return to work after a four-day strike

Unions representing tanker drivers working for Shell have reached a deal with employers in their pay dispute, averting a new strike later this week.

The deal comes after two days of talks between the two sides and as drivers returned to work from four days of industrial action.

The stoppage, which started on Friday, led to hundreds of petrol stations across Britain running out of fuel.

The dispute involved 600 drivers working for two haulage firms.

No details of the settlement were immediately available.

After the deal was announced, one driver working for Hoyer UK - one of the haulage firms involved - said: "As long as we have got the deal we are after and it's a fair one, then so be it. It's time to get back to work and get on with it."
