My Z went into safety boost..... and BMW Z4 race

Would the ECU store why it has done this?

I was on the motorway, pulling hard in 4th gear and it reverted to safety mode for some reason. It was quite a hot day, but I had a tank of fresh V-Power in it.

I really don't know why it would go into safety boost. It does it VERY occasionally (every few weeks or so). So it is a very intermittent problem and hard to trace.

Anyway, I gets off the motorway, go down a DC and het stuck behind a car doing 50. So I pass him, and so does the Z4 behind me :D

We wait at the lights, him on the left, me on right. He has his top down and his beautiful lady has her long blonde hair flapping all over the place in the light wind :)

Lights go green, I'm not sure if he wants to play OR if I'm up to it (being in safety boost) so he gets away first and has 3/4 car length on me. I overhaul this in 2nd gear and his face as I passed him was like he was chewing a lemon  he was not amused.

Anyway on the next DC rolling from 50, 70 etc I beat him every time. Not by a huge amount but still beat him nonetheless. I would guess that he was in the 3.0L 320bhp jobbies because the Z on safety boost was quite close in performance (250bhp?)

So I get home, park up. 5 mins later I need to go out again so I take the Z and see if i'm back to full boost again and yes, it's back to full power.

What would cause it to go into safety mode? And would I be able to read back a previous fault code?

HI Rob,

Mine has been doing the same recently, and my fuel pump control unit gave up the ghost on Saturday luckily it was parked on Dianes drive at the time. Don't know if the two are related though

the safe mode clears after each fresh start...mine use to do it every now and again before i put a 1meg resistor across dett plug...what i found was a combination of heat and petrol stations selling shite fuel even thou i was putting v-power in theres no way of checking what your getting:mad: i allways knock the timing back 2 degrees in the summer as hot intake charges and ignition advance dont go well together

The fault codes stay in place for 50 starts when using a ConZult, but going into safety boost isn't automatically considered a 'fault' -it can be normal operation, eg if it's detting.

Hi Dave,

do you think yours is doing it because your fault means your fuel pump is not supplying enough fuel?

I think I may knock a degree off it then. Did you notice any lack of power with 2deg change?

Ok so it's not necessarily going to record the reason for going into safety mode. :(

Maybe getting rid of the stock IC's and replacing with either larger SMIC's or a FMIC will lower intake temps and reduce the chance of detting as well.

Thanks fellas! :duffer:

I don't know what is causing it just that the fueling could've been an issue.

the only thing thaat does seem odd though is thaat when mine went into safety mode it was typically when it was cold outside.... it's been ok in hot weather

It's been very hot the last two days, so a few questions for you.

what psi were you running ?.

do you have stock injectors ?.

what pertol (octane) were you using ?

a after market chip ?

The reason I ask is that when I first read your post I though that you may have had a reading on your knock/det sensor which may cause the ecu to kick into safty boost.

You can clear this error by disconnecting the battery for an hour or so, but it would be worth getting a conzult on it to see why it may have det (if infact this was the reason)

As Andy says, sounds like you had a bit of Det which knocked you back into safety mode. Engine off and on will let you play again until he next lot of det is picked up....

Most likely because of the heat, drop the boost down (9-12 psi is better than 7psi!) or put some intercoolers on.

Boost is at 0.8 bar / 12psi normally (Apexi gauge)

Stock injectors

Lovely fresh V-Power (only ever V-Power too)

Aftermarket chip-No idea. I have not ever looked.

I think I need aftermarket intercoolers :D (it's a good excuse) :p

I even had the window open on the motorway, and know the exact point it dropped into safety boost, but I heard no audible det at all! In fact I never hear it in the black car.

Cheers all. Go get a nice cool beer ;) :duffer:
