can anyone explain this one to me?

first thing in the morning when its quite cold, the Z will run at temperatures between 190 and 200 degrees F (87-93 C) after she's warmed up on the way to work.

when its the evening, and recently its been quite warm and pleasant, the Z will run between 180 and 190 degrees F on the way home (82-87 C)

...being read from an aftermarket water gauge.

is there anything weird going on here or not?

sorry can't help, my (stock) gauge only reads "car is off" and "car is on" and "car has blown up" didn't realise it was an analogue scale :)

When the engine is cold the thermostat remains closed until IIRC 84 C, until then there is no water going to the rad so the gauge may go up slightly (depending on where the sender has been positioned) then once it warms up and opens the hot water goes in to the rad then normal cooling will happen and the temp gauge may go down a few degrees

HTH

soory you is wrong me auld mucker, stock thermostat opens at 76.5,have one sitting in front of me.I would check your levels and coolant ratio as it seems a little hot to me,just taken mine down to southern france and back and never got above 85 87 and thats when we decided to ahem..test the accuracy of the speedo.Or maybe the stat could do with changing, not a hard job.

It is because you are late for work and giving the car some welly to get in on time :D

My lexus does that, sits slightly higher for the first few miles then goes down to normal temp, maybe to heat engine quicker!

Wow, stumbled over this thread while searching for something else. It was a knackered thermostat in the end. After it was replaced (in '09 I think) she now usually runs 75 - 82c. :)
