It's not as freaky as it looks. A feature of the number nine (and I suspect it may work in other bases where you use a number of the base -1) is that the sum of the two numbers when multipled by nine adds up to nine e.g 10x9=90 9+0=9, 5x9=45 4+5=9. So anyway all you are actually doing is starting with the number 9, taking away 5 which gives 4 and hence the letter D. How many countries start with the letter D and how many animals start with the letter K etc ....

And it works purely because the 2 digits from 0-9 always multiply to form a 2 digit number that adds up to 9...

 

1 x 9 = 9

2 x 9 = 18 - 1+8=9

3 x 9 = 27 - 2+7=9

etc

 

Remove 5.... which makes 4

4 is D...etc etc etc...
