Hellohah chappies and chappesses...

I am looking to replace my smokey tubs but do not want the gamble of re-con units... i would like some advice from peoples experiences for what to go for...

I dont want silly power, though my internals are forged. I dont want anything that requires special manifolds as i already have divorced downpipes and de-cats... i currently only have the standard injectors fitted but will be upgrading to 555's in the not too distant future.

So basically, in reflection, i want to run a reliable 14ish psi without overstressing the tubs with the potential for a couple more as and when more fuel flow/cooling/braking etc becomes available!

My initial thoughts and recommendations are in the form of the GT525's as these fall perfectly into the power band and are of a very sensible price... if any1 can shed some light as to the reliablility/lifespan/performance etc of these tubs that would be greatly appreciated, otherwise any other turbo recommendation that you have please dont hesitate to advise :D

cheerZ in advance...

Im sure you already know, but Jimmer is running the GT525's and has been happy with them. Ofcourse the U.S claimed Power figures are way out on what you'll typically achieve here. I think Jimmer is looking at around 400rwhp with 19/20psi. They are very good value.

I've not been in a Z32 with the GT525's, but I have been in other reworked T25 Hybrids, and they offer good spoolup with a strong power increase across the range without tailing of as much as stock turbos at higher rpm.

All I would say is you dont want to wish you had gone bigger 6 months down the line. I reckon they probably suit your requirements quite well though. My choice should I upgrade would be the JWT 530BB's (Garrett GT2554R) they are about £700 more but do include 5 bolt downpipes from Z1.

Would be interesting for somebody to be able to put up a comparison between then if anyone has experience.

I have driven Jimmers with GT525's and they are just fantastic and spool up superbly. Of course he has also got 555's injectors and polished stainless downpipes. The car just pulls and pulls, its just like taking off in aeroplane. It's very quick and the way it keeps pulling iis phenominal. GT525's get my vote especially bought from Z1 motorsport, they are still cheap due to the Dollar.

14psi on those bigger turbo's will flow more air than 14psi on stockers therefore you will run out of fuelling. You can probably run the turbo's at a lower boost level with stock injectors until you upgrade them.

The turbo's you're looking at are 5 bolt, so you won't be able to reuse you're current downpipes

the GT525's are definattly 4 bolt. They are built from Standard cores.

dunno whether this help was looking on ebay and found this.

turbos

They are quite a bit cheaper on that zfever website that was posted earlier but they are 5 bolt so will need new down pipes

yes, just looked at the link and you're quite right

How come you didn't replace them when the engine was being rebuilt?

you mean like someone told me to over and over again!

i cant argue tbh glenn as you are 100% right but the philosophy @ the time was that the standard tubs looked in good condition and i really wanted to get a year or so out of them to give me time to uprate the cooling, brakes, suspension etc beforehand... unfortunately this wasnt to be :( my car appears to be cursed and has had a failure of nearly every major mechanical component since i bought it... the turbos are now smoking on idle and my gearbox is crunching into 2nd and a bit in 3rd...

i need to get the tubbies changed for the mot as it will not get though the emmisions like that... so its tail between legs and take the hit time :( im definately going to buy a 'new' set of tubs as the re-con game appears to be a bit of a lottery and i dont wanna be forking out for the engine out again...

I would'nt say that...it all depends on who is doing the recon. Dont forget the GT525's are essentially just recons with upgrades, hence the core exhange charge, they rebuild the GT525's from stock turbos with new parts just like any turbo reconditioner.

It is however a lot cheaper to buy these from the U.S than it would be to have a Reputable company in the UK do the same recon upgrade.

thanks every1 for your help and advise... i think the gt525's are perfect for my requirements, although a little early in the mod stage, as all i really want is good reliable power. iv had this z for nearly a year now and have barely driven it so my philosophies have changed a bit in that id rather just have the car running reliably so i can get a nice summers worth of enjoyment out of it :)

then again iv come out with a big bonus from all of this... although its cost alot of money to achieve at least everything is now fresh, new and good for many many miles... my bodywork is pretty immaculate so my final goal of what i want from a zed is getting closer...

shame its still red

good point... and z1 are a very repuatble company in themselves. so the gt525's are warrantied by z1 unlike the new stock units they offer (that dont require a core charge) which are warrantied by garrett?

yeh..although Im sure they outsource...but still yeh :)

Ill be keeping an eye on your motor then joel.

Ideally id love to be able to run mid 400bhp figures reliably, so at the moment GT525's are looking ideal for the job.

Keep us updated matey

Jimmer said he was kinda impressed with the GT600R's that he fitted into mine over the winter.

Could also be an option if your gonna have to change your downpipes anyway!!! :D

already purchased the divorced downpipes and the gt525's bolt straight on so i think they are the girlies for me!

A bit more than impressed I would say. He keeps trying to pursued himself and his missus that a pair of GT600's would be a very good investment.

Yeah, he mentioned something like that when i came went down to pick her up!

Something about trying to persuade the missus to let him buy a set and fit them in winter 2008/2009!!!

well... $3k down and my GT525s' are on there merry way... i added a few cheeky other parts to my order while the mrs wasnt looking!

accidental 400bhp project here we come

if i just run a bigger drill down my stock injectors can i open em up to 555s? :smw:

Not sure if anyone here is running these, but they have a good reputation overseas and with other Clubs.
