I have tried them all now and i think Auto glym is the best allround for black paint work.

Nice finish

Ease of use

Cost

I used to use Autoglym before I discovered Meguiar's.

Ther Meguiar's Gold class stuff is superb as is the 3 stage stuff  , and they have full detailing products and dozens of other products for Trim, claying, leather, glass...etc

Or Zymol if you want to splash the cash - £100 for the starter pack, and £50 for a small tub of wax.

Dont have a high opinion of Turtlewax. Cheap generic stuff that does'nt compare imo. Got loads of the stuff, usually bought for me by Relatives at xmas who must see it in special Xmas offers at halfords.

Mer is old skool, but too chawky. I use to prep my Dad's Trucks at Show and Shine competitions when I was a kid with the stuff.

While we are on this subject, quick question. My car has a fine layer of overspray on it (from being near where spraying has been done) i was gonna t-cut it with a special sponge i have on a drill (works well on cars i'v done in the past), i then thought i would do a proper polish/wax, what are the best Meguires products to buy, to achieve the best results???

Used Autoglym Super Resin polish first, and never liked the powder effect it left when drying on the bodywork. Tried Meguiar's gold class clear coat paste wax and been using it ever since.

Not tried the others cause I'm happy with the gold class finish.

I do think the polish is only as good as the person using it. I could have been using the Autoglym incorrectly as other people have said it's amazing, but as i said, i get on much better with Meguiar's

Mind you i have only tried Meguiar's tech wax not the gold class...

Im currently using the Meg's 3 stage in restoring the paint on my zed, and its very good, but the paint cleaner isnt quiet abrasive enough to remove the swirls. Im going to try meg's #4 next and see how it comes along.

Interesting thread......

......but I have a question. Does anyone know of a polish for black cars that repels grime, rain marks etc?

My new car looks great when it's clean but after a few days it could do with another wash :(

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I like the Auto Glym Connoisseur finishing polish. It goes on everything. Leaves no white residue a deep and lasting shine and the car beeds off for about 3 months after. Muck and grim just rinses staight off.

You have to used the Super Resin polish first and bumper care etc but it really is the mutts. I've tried the Meguiar's Gold class stuff and it is better than the Auto Glym Super Resin polish on its own but the Auto Glym Connoisseur finishing polish edges it for me and it's effects last much longer.

I use Autoglym, actually did the z yesterday and it looks lovely

Just checked the bottle and the big bottle I've got is called Auto Glym "Extra Gloss Protection", but the small bottle is called Auto Glym Connoisseur finishing polish.

Same stuff but must have changed the name. Don't know which is new and which is old?????? Gold Lable anyway on both

Gloss protection must be the old one, never heard of connoisseur finishing polish

Has anybody tried spraying filtered water on a freshly polished black car,

then buffing it off with a microfibre cloth?

The results are superb!

Id suggest clay barring the car before the polish to get the embedded molecules of dirt/resin etc. Some bits wont come out with just a polish :)

Zymol Carbon- unbeatable in my opinion, worth every penny. For the ultimate depth of shine on black I would:-

1. foam bath

2. two bucket wash

3. claybar treatment

4. foam bath and rinse

5. polish with Auto Glym

6. prep surface with Zymol HD cleanse (very important)

7. hand apply Zymol Carbon, leave to cure and buff by hand

8. hand apply a 2nd layer of Zymol Carbon 24 hrs later and buff by hand

9. buff again by hand 3 hours later.

I'm a real detailing nut and I've tried so many methods, and this gives unbelievable results, if you can be arsed!!! :D
