have z32 jap import & 200sx (s13) UK car & have never been able to get one policy to cover both cars- all insurers I've contacted say its because there's a mix of UK & import- can't see why it matters!

Has anyone here got a solution to this- if you suggest Trade policy how easy is it to obtain & is there an issue as I'm not a trader!!

i'd think very very few people have 1 policy personal cover hence you are unlikly to get a quote as its not competitive enough to carry them, its commercial, traders, fleet that have 1 policy cover, you're probably unlikley to meet the requirments unless you have a commercial address & limited company status etc etc also the excess is usually higher and no drivers under 25 etc

Im with admiral. I'm 22yr old and i have a multicar policy! I have a j-spec zed, a citroen xsara and a pug 406( both uk cars!) and admiral had no bother whatsoever with insuring me!

yep i'm with elephant who are part of admiral with the same sort of cover.

Do you really need them both on the same policy? What i mean is, is there an advantage?

I'm with Bell.co.uk and had no problems insuring a J-Spec Z32 and a UK Corolla. They were on different policies, but they used my no claims to cover both cars.

Not the case

Its easy to get trade insurance

I got mine at 23, dont need a ltd company or anything like that

I can have unlimted cars as long as I own them, got the mrs on it too

i advised them the 300 was very modded and asked if they wanted a list of mods.

I had trade insurance with Roadruner, their age limit was 21, myself, wife, my mate and his wife were all on the policy, any car with a value up to £15000. It only cost us £45 each a month but we did had to pay a £500 deposit that is returned when you cancel the policy. At the time we had a Renault Clio, Mitsubishi Warrior Sport, Nissan Primera (p12), BMW 535 SPORT, MGTF and a BMW 520. These were all our own cars as we were never in the trade but we never had any problems with the insurance, we had our own address down as "home address" and my mates address as the "business address" as you couldn't have a work from home business with Roadrunner.

All good info! just lookin to reduce costs? by having one policy. Trade policy looks promising, which companies have you used - then I will get quotes and compare to multicar policies.

Ive got a traders policy, its not my main business but i just explained that i did work on a lot of different peoples cars and needed the cover to drive them etc.

My policy costs me £628 per year, fully comp, with £5000 cover which is plenty as i never seem to own a car worth more than that !

Rather than go to one particular insurance company, it would be better to approach a local insurance agent/broker who deal with commercial policies

We had £8000 cover at first but when my mate bought his new Warrior we increased it to the £15000, i couldn't believe it when they told us it was only an extra £40 total.

Most trade insurers will insure you as a part time trader working from home, there not really interested in what you do, we just said we done valeting. We ended up going with Roadrunner as they were cheapest but you have to have a business address different from your home address with them.

i thought with a traders licence you had to sell so many cars month?? or was that some juse bull sh**ing

i work in insurance and i would have thought if you lied about being a trader of some sort when your not you may struggle when making a claim, may be asked to prove your occupation or something. Not really sure.

When did you take out your policy with Roadrunner?

I took mine out with them last May (due for renewal this may)

I said that I trade from home and buy / sell cars is a part time project.

I gave them full details of my full time employment as an IT consultant.

No problem they said, I clearly remember them putting down that I trade from my home address.

They do state that they may request proof of trading but my mate has been with them 8 years (runs a very small track day business) and never had any such request.

He claimed last year when he pushed a woman into a roundabout - all fine.

I told them that I trade through ebay and buy sell around one car a month.

So far this year I have sold a Metro, corsa, citroen, honda cbr, laguna and a fiesta.

Bought a Nissan 4x4, vectra, my supra etc

I bought the corsa and citroen from friends, put new mots and them and did some tidying, sold them on for a few £££

They said that was all fine and I took out the policy, if you check my feedback you can see that I have actually bought around one car a month!

By the way if you are going to take out a trade policy with roadrunner we both get £30 cash back so give em my name :)

Hi Ed,

it was about 2 years ago when i had my policy, i had just put down valeting as a part time proffession, when i spoke to them on the phone i said i also done some trading as i was buying salvage cars at the time also, the guy from Roadrunner was great and said that was no problem and that all cars i had including salvage, valeted and privately owned cars were covered. I think i just ticked valeting on the form as it was top of the list lol. They have probably changed their business address policy since as a lot of people do buy and sell cars part time from home. I even told them that our business address was my mates house and they said thats fine. I think we did get a couple of cheaper quotes but Roadrunner came out tops in an Adtrader survey at the time.

Just remembered, my mate who was on the policy with me had just got his license back after being banned for 10 years, so with that in mind for 4 people it was a good deal.

I'd have thought this as well.

If you are not a trader then it's best to bite the bullet and pay for a regular insurance policy. OK so a 300zx may not be worth much at present; however if you hit someone else and they claim injury etc etc, you could be facing a £100k claim including legal fees. Not really worth risking all for, just to save a few pounds now.

Just my opinion...... :nono:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Richard- my thinking exactly- at renewal I will try the Admiral, & elephant & get a couple of trade policy quotes as well then make my decision

thanks for the input people!!

You don't need to be a registered trader to legally obtain trade insurance, same as you don't need to be a trader to obtain and use trade plates. I was buying salvage cars and repairing them at home using Roadrunner trade insurance (i ticked valeting on the insurance form as salvaging wasn't on the list but sorted this out over the phone with Roadrunner) myself, wife, my mate and his wife could then drive the cars fully insured until i sold them on (although we still have them) i would still have the trade insurance but when my mate bought his Mitsubishi Warrior it came with insurance so although my mate and his wife dropped out of the trade policy it was still £190 for just my wife and myself so no longer finacially viable.

If you own a few cars the chances are you will sell your cars at some point and buy different car/cars so you could be considered a part time trader, the other benefits are you don't have to go looking for insurance quotes for the new car as your already covered.

I read the link vijay posted about the guy not getting his insurance payout, all insurance company's will try and screw you wether its car, life or home insurance, they are all quick to take your money but will do their best not to pay out.

thanks bigSSS- point re not needing new quotes on change of vehicle is very valid & usefull- thanks

Wow300 and I use Tradex(thru carol nash) very good price and a good cover. Mind you we use it as his business 'mastertint' involves sometimes driving very expensive customers cars. We both have our zeds on it too. Never had no problems ;)

As I said i advised Roadrunner that I was in full time employment and my only trade would be working on projects at the weekends.

All this was fully disclosed when I took out the policy.

BIGSSS - Its great being able to just buy anything without having to think about insurance isnt it! I had 5 cars at one point!

Totally agree Ed, i would still have it if i could afford it, my mate who was in with me had a massive garage at his house so i used to work on my cars there and had this as the business address but i will seriously consider looking into again now that roadrunner will insure from home. As for the not worrying about getting quotes its great, the guys i spoke to at roadrunner said to just update them from time to time with what cars i had.
