whats the legal situation with having a smaller numberplate sitting at the bottom of your bumper and facing upwards? i need to think about relocating mine soon as its really blocking the rad and i dont want to have it above the bumper because it'll look like an old man's moustache :D

there's nowhere really to secure it at the top (like teeth) so the only option ive got really is to have it facing upward at the bottom. i know a few of you guys on here have done the same - have you had any bother off the 'taxmen' over these?

Yeah i got pulled for mine and told it was too small

didn't say it couldnt be on the bottom of the bumper facing up tho

Mot says has to be legable from a certain distance, something like 25m i think

and within all the size and spacing rules etc

I wonder what the legally would be of having it on the sunstip in the correct size and spacing etc, like the stick on ones you used to get.

Had mine like this for about 4 years and never been stopped.

It's smaller than it should be and often ends up almost flat after some high speed use LOL

Chris.

Im a member of the edinburgh cruise website. Do you want me to post this up on there and ask the Police Cruise Liaison Officers what their take on it is?

the info is on the dvla and police site somewhere.

Dave, and others, I've looked into this before as I've been running with a small size plate for about 3 years now.

I got pulled last year and 'bluffed' my way out of any problem with the excuse of the 'Imported odd size restricted plate rule' and got away with it. BUT, that rule only applies to the rear, or in exceptional circumstances to very limited numbers of fronts, and ours ARN'T included in the front circumstance simply because you CAN fit a standard size UK plate.

It refers to the "motorcycle size number plate indent" which an imported Zed would have in the rear bumper, but you can clearly fit a normal UK plate to the front as there is no physical restriction to stop you.

So in short, it's illegal! :D

Yes Mr Bean is right! but that doesn't stop us lot with small plates.

I got a £30 fine last year for mine, but it hasn't made me put a big plate back on...

i have standard letters on a smaller backing if that makes any sence? my argument would be, you dont have to have a white reflective backing as some cars are exempt and ours fall into that argument.

you could have a jap style one like the rear on the front just like the Evo, that gives the car a jdm look at the same time of keeping it legal. Not sure where you would fit it though.

Sunstrip idea was a good idea, i also had mine in the window for ages.

Been through this loads. So long as the plate is

A) The correct legal size and spacing. (Jspec cars can have Jspec sized plat on front, but it must be 150mm X 300mm and the letters on 2 rows)

B) Legible from 64 feet

C) Correct lettering design

D) On the correct reflective backing ie meets BS Standards.

Hence my plate on my blue Zed is legal.

I had mine laying down like yours and was told that it was illegal.

i had the same bumper as yours dave and i got my mate who does decals to make me a stick on which i stuck above the front grill.he allso done my latest so iff you want one let me know ;)

I had mine laying down like yours and was told that it was illegal.

I was twice told the same by coppers and have been pulled 3 times sine i had a laminate with the laws and criteria made. Last cpper took it in temper. Got get to make another up.

Mine isn't flat it's at an angle. The photo in my sig is taken from very low down. If it's in a car park and your 64 feet away it is very easy to read & that regardless what the patrolman may say is the only legal criteria that determins what angle is has to be.

I got pulled tonight on the way home from work and was told that the front plate wasnt legal cause you couldnt see it from a distance. The plate used to be fixed to the mesh but i moved it to the bottom of the kit but because it was layed flat you couldnt see it. So now ive got to get a smaller plate made and move it somewhere else. Does anyone know of the correct measurements for a smaller plate. (i dont want to be told off again.)

Why is it that this is not picked up on the MOT's

MOT book said that the letters must be all the same size and thickness and thats it.

nothing about size...So a small plate passes an MOT but is not legal Hmmmm..

Chris..

i have had mine in my window for about 1 1/2 years and never been pulled (and i live in london) Didnt want to spoil the look of the car, but worth mentioning that as soon as i got off the ferry in France io got a 100 euro fine DOH !
