Hi Guys..

Well.. After having my specially made number plates for just over a year now (bought from a guy on here) without the blink of an eye-lid from the authority, today was the day that changed :(. I got pulled over for the following reasons:

1. Non British Standard Front Number plate

2. Non British Standard Rear Number plate

I was given a warning and 14 days to change the plates to meet the British Number plate standards which isnt too bad as i could have got fined.

Here's The Car:

After having checked the current sizes of my Character Height, Width, Stroke and Space between characters there was only one requirement that was actually legal and met the British Standards for imported cars which was the character height :nono: !

So now i am on the hunt for someone who can make me a pair of number plates that fit the following requirements (or nearest to those):

Character Height: 64mm

Character Width: 44mm

Character Stroke: 10mm

Space Between Characters: 10mm

Is Anyone around to make me a pair and be sent to me within 14 days :) ?

Regards

Rob

Hi mate,

The rear one should be fine, it looks like a standard import plate.

I used fancyplates.co.uk to make my front one. HTH

Anwyay, I am not going to bother changing mine even though I was busted last month by the stinking rozzers (yes Nickz32, that comment was for you! lol). I can't be @rsed...

Hi Rob,

A & S signs 01226 270707 up north somewhere have made several sets of plates for me over the years both show plates & legal ones. They'll do exactly what you want (custom plate size or lettering) just give them the measurements looking at circa £10-15 for one plate and i think £25 for a pair usually deliver within 7 days.

I drive it with my custom plates but always have a set of "proper" legal ones at home just in case i do get pulled so i can swap 'em over for the MOT producer doc. then switch em back :slap:

Having said that only been pulled for my plates twice in 3 years ;)

HTH

James ;)

Just re-read your post.

So they gave you 14 days to produce evidence of new plates?

I just got a £30 fine!

I got pulled ages ago and let off with a warning.

My front plate is much smaller than the proper ones.

My rear one looks just like yours and i thought it was legal

But he said that the characters were too thin, height on them is ok tho

Since then I have been looking for the sticker type ones you see on mx5's and had one on my old mini

you cant buy them as number plates now tho so I have stopped bothering to look

Cheeky sod!

I had a very similar scenario with my last zed with the rear plate, it looks the same as your, but the traffic cop said it was ok as it met with import car standards.

The scheme is called Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) where you have to take it to an MOT station and have it re assessed for road worthyness. Thing is, you cant fail and MOT for having small plates. All seems a bit daft to me!

I just got a £30 fine to..

And..... got another one tonight for being on the mobile, by a silver skoda undercover car

I'm sure you can fail MOT for illegal numberplates it's just they turn a blind eye to it.

I think you will also find that if you are given a £30 fine then DVLA are also notified and if you continue to flaunt it with an illegal number plate they can revoke it and you would be forced to Q plate it. Then your car would always look like a stolen / recovered car (not the only reason for Q plates though)

I was not in the Zed... lol

Yes they can fail plates on mot.

I was told by the copper that done me if you get caught on the 3rd time with the same plate that DVLA can retract the plate, and if the original number is still available then it will go back to that reg.

For the bike which has got a small plate and on my old zed i had a small plate, every time i MOT it, i only got an advisory. I was speaking to the MOT tester and he said that VOSA did bring in a thing for illegal plates, and then promptly retracted them. He did tell me the reason for the retraction but i cant remember what it was

Thanks for the advice guys..

MGH - Yes he gave me a warning and 14 days to produce new Legal numberplates, Fit them and then take it to an MOT Centre to check them and fill out some form that the police gave me.

I think I would rather pay the £30! lol.

I have spoken to a few coppers about this subject and they have all said that they don't think the DVLA are even informed if a number plate is found to be illegal.

What do you think Nick?

The only way that i know of that the DVLA would find out that you have been repeatedly been stuck on for a small number plate, is that if you are given a ticket several times by the SAME officer.

DVLA arnt informed of non-endorsable ticket, for the very reason that they do not endorse a driving licence. The only way i aware of is if the officer who has caught someone repeat offending can file a very lengthy report to the DVLA as to why he thinks that a Q plate should be issued, and then the DVLA make the desicion.

To be completely honest ive only ever seen this done once in 5 years, and its such a rare occurance, i wouldnt expect to see it happen again any time soon. But it DOES happen. Just hope you never get stopped by the same copper more than once with an illegal plate. I'm personally happy to run that risk

I agree, shouldn't use a mobile.... shouldn't speed either! but some times we all do these things...

Lets face it... its all about revenue these days nothing else

i.e only allowed the europeon stars on the left of the number plate no other logo and no tiny slogan along the bottom so tiny you cant see it unless your head is next to it, what difference does that make to safety, none, just means you pay £30 fine. Or get caught smoking in your own company car car, get fined, great init

Thanks, that clears it up.

I will NOT get caught by the same copper as I was well out of my normal areas when I was caught.

The way I see it, I would rather pay a £30 fine and be less likely to be caught by a front facing speed camera.

Thanks Nick.

reason for rejection for a MOT & legal requirements are 2 very different things! they did try to add some more of the legal requirements & have retracted that until further notice!

Yep, my dodgy number plate has never caused issues at MOT time.

When I was stopped by a copper about my number plates and incidentally the figures are the same size front and rear, he told me only the front was illegal. As the back plate was framed by the bumper and retaining brackets, that was exceptable under the 'imported car exception' rule. The front number plate is not framed and therefore could be the proper size. He gave me a verbal warning and then asked to look under the bonnet. After 5 minutes of social motoring talk he pissed off. That was 9 months ago and the same number plate is still fitted. I do think that it is down to the copper and your attitude when you get pulled.
