Hello and good evening! Could anybody help me with possible causes of my clutch pedal travelling all the way to the floor with no resistance and i`m also unable to select gears, fluid seems ok in reservoir, has been bled because was being a bit of a git to change before, this helped, has been ok some times and a sod the next.I`m thinking more air somewhere maybe? Even pivot ball or clutch fork? All suggestions gratefully received..oh and tough luck France! :p

Maybe the seals in the master cylinder, but I would have thought they would get worse before failure.

Master cylinder knackered and/or air being drawn into system I reckon.

Hi Andy, thought bout you as i drove past yours on thurs hope you`re well! ok after looking up a few posts i think i may have used the wrong fluid when it was bled, used 5.1 i take it this damages the seals? I don`t think i used it in the braking system that was dot 4,do either of these cause problems or do i have to drain the brakes just in case? bugger bugger bugger ah well live n learn i guess.

My money is on the pivot ball being the cause.

However if the pivot ball goes it will usually blow out the slave cylinder and sometimes take the master cylinder with it.

Best to get the pivot ball checked as well even if you do find problems with the slave or master.

Did you use the bleed valve on the drivers side of the engine bay? I had this problem a couple of times due to a leak in my slave cylinder. Open the bleed valve, cover your paintwork or run a tube from the valve, pump the clutch and you should feel the pedal resistance return as the air is expelled..

Drop in for a cuppa (or a beer) next time.

Doubt whether the fluid would wreck the seals quickly, may be worth going back to DOT 4.1 though.

I see people have posted a number of possible causes, you ought to be able to rule a few of them out by watching for movement on the slave cylinder when the pedal is pressed.

DOT5.1 will make the rubber seals inside the master and slave cylinder go soft and swollen very quickly.

best is to flush the system and get rebuild kits for both..these are very cheap.

Well after looking on the net and then finding out that poor old mr feenys had to go back into hospital i bit the bullet and got a new slave and master ordered from the states even with duty etc it`s too cheap not to,everything else is gradually getting replaced so may as well,RE Andy, will do! figured you were at work as it was in the day but that would be most pleasant old boy cheers! And the slave does move although not as much as normal, when i get a chance i`ll get it on stands and have a look through into the box see if anything obvious in there, don`t suppose anybody has the number of the mechanic mike uses do they? in case it is in box
